Does the 6000 pick up OTA HD?

The part you need is the 8VSB Tuner Cartridge:

8VSB stands for 8-Level Vestigal Side-Band and is an adopted standard for receiving digital off-air signals. The 8VSB Tuner Cartridge is used in the Model 6000 receiver. The cartridge is installed in the #2 rear panel port on the 6000 receiver. As it's name suggests, the 8VSB Tuner Cartridge allows the Model 6000 receiver to deliver analog and digital off-air broadcasts.

Without adequate off-air reception, one can enjoy a cost savings to the Model 6000 receiver by not having to purchase the 8VSB tuner cartridge. With adequate signal, one will need to purchase a suitable off-air antenna (not sold directly by DISH Network) to receive the various off-air signals in the area.

Why do my local channels have poor picture quality or no picture at all?

There are many possible explanations why off-air channels may be poor. When experiencing problems with off-air reception, consider the following points for troubleshooting.

Digital off-air service may be interrupted because:

Off-air digital technology is still in its infancy, many broadcast stations are experimenting with their signal.
Broadcasters are testing digital signals, and may stop broadcasting without notice.
Many broadcasters do not yet have permanent broadcast stations.
Broadcasters are not legally required to provide full-time digital signals for several years.
Some digital channels do not broadcast 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Analog and Digital off-air reception also depends upon:

The distance between the broadcast stations and the location
The broadcast station's power
Obstacles between the station and the location, such as mountains, buildings, trees, etc.
Multiple broadcast stations (to receive good signals from several stations, compromise how to position the antenna. A rotor or more than one antenna may be required.)

Can both the 8VSB and the Enhanced HD Module be used in the model 6000 at this time?
Yes, both modules can be used at the same time. The two modules have completely different functions. The 8VSB Module is for off-air HD programming. The Enhanced HD Module is for satellite HD programming.

Do the model 6000 and 6000u receivers say the same thing in the System Information screen?
It depends on the modules that are installed. The models 6000u as well as the HD 6000 from RCA, already have the Enhanced HD Module installed in it. If the model 6000 has an Enhanced HD Module installed, it will say the same thing in the System Information screen, 6000/8PSK.

How do I find out what local digital channels are available in my area?
Visit the following websites: www.nab.org or www.fcc.gov.

How can I find out what kind of off-air antenna is best for my location?
www.antennaweb.org is a valuable resource to determine what kind of antenna is best for the area. Simply submit the address and instantly find out what type of antenna best suits the location and programming needs.

Is "Program Information" available for off-air digital and analog broadcast channels?
Program information is available for the off-air analog channels during prime time for the major networks. Future Model 6000 software upgrades will incorporate program information for digital channels when that information is provided in the broadcast.

Can the 8VSB Tuner Cartridge be installed by the consumer?
Yes! Just be sure to follow the Instructions that are included with the tuner.

What happens to the EPG display when the Tuner Cartridge is remove?
When the Tuner Cartridge is removed, the off-air channels do not appear in the EPG and cannot be accessed.

Does the receiver need to be re-set for local channels if the Tuner Cartridge is removed?
No. If the Tuner Cartridge is placed back into the port, the original, off-air channel setup is restored.

Installation

Verify Model 6000 system is installed and has current software.

Turn off receiver and unplug.

Insert cartridge in real panel port #2 (left) so that the cartridge's fan is facing up. Do NOT touch the gold-colored contacts on the cartridge.

Secure the cartridge with the three cover screws.

Plug receiver into power outlet.

To set up the receiver for HDTV, refer to the Model 6000 User Guide. Make sure that in the HDTV setup menu, in the Analog Type list, the type of analog TV signals for the system is selected. Choices are Off-Air or Cable (includes HRC, or IRC). Select the Off-Air option for an off-air broadcast TV antenna.

The fan runs all the time and is normal operation for the 8VSB Cartridge.
Do not remove the Tuner Cartridge unless absolutely necessary, doing so will disable reception of programming and increase risk of damage to the Tuner Cartridge. If removal is necessary, first unplug the receiver and gently remove the Tuner Cartridge. If the port is unused for an extended period of time, replace the original receiver port cover.
For outdoor antenna installations, follow all local and National Electrical Code (NEC) guidelines.
Antennas and reception considerations for off-air analog broadcasts are the same as for reception of off-air digital broadcasts.

6000 OTA module

I've had an E6000 for about 4 years, upgraded (bought the modules) to the 6PSK and 8VSB. A few things you may not be aware...
1. To receive an OTA station, the receiver must have an active satellite input. If you disconnect the main satelite input cable, the OTA will continue for awhile, but if you change channels, turn off RX, the OTA signal will not be available unless the 6000 has a live satellite signal.
2. The 8VSB module and it's built in cousin on the 811 is a first generation HD receiver. It is not nearly as sensitive as the newer tuners being built into the newer HD TVs.
