EchoStar Announces Spectrum Sale and Commercial Agreement with SpaceX

Cough, cough, FCC, cough, cough.
They just dropped their investigation into Echostar.

Their press release says they had envisioned using the spectrum for satellite all along? And yet did nothing that would deploy it from space until now selling to elon musk to do it? And this is all legal because musk is a friend of the president....

i started to think that's why charlie squatted on spectrum for so long. he knew that one day he could use it for leverage one day. well that one day has came!!!
That is possible, but he did spend billions building out a mobile network. Additionally, there was a plan to use the spectrum for private corporate deals. 5G ended up underperforming for a lot of applications and the ability to monetize some of the spectrum likely contracted for Charlie. He bet huge on 5G, and lost... but somehow managed to use a part of that bet and make a good deal of money... however, that might just be dumb luck seeing that the FCC is guarded by wolves and the hens are long since eaten. That likely couldn't have been predicted back when the spectrum was being auctioned.

So he had a great opportunity and blew it? Wasted all that bandwidth for 15 years? Put himself deep in the hole, anyone would know the price of that spectrum only went up in value. Its not like they can invent it can they? Hell they took some of the TV spectrum(UHF) because it was worth so much!

Wonder what a real company could have done all those years? Guess we will never know?
Depends on perspective.

When he bought the bandwidth there was little interest in it from the industry. SpaceX was just trying to launch their 1st gen satellites and there was little interest by the other carriers.

So he sat on it (hoping to use it for his buildout) and then took the opportunity to sell a very high-demand product now. SpaceX was not interested until they started to plan their 3rd Gen products, which could handle the bandwidth.
It's just like a watch. Buy it now for $39 bucks. Put it away in pristine shape for 10 years and it's now a $150 watch. Keep it for 25 years, and it's now an $800 watch , etc. Collectors or people that really want it will pay what they need to get it.

So was he an idiot or someone shrewd businessman who knew he had a solid backup plan??

I wish I knew what Charlie has planned for the future. App prices are going up & up. I hope he tries to reviabilitize Dish satellite service & comes out with a new super Hopper 4.

And another thing people are missing here is... Boost Mobile lives on. As does DISH.

Now let see Charlie buy DIRECTV for $1. :) I wouldn't bet against him.
Are they at least going to want that $2 billion back in any sort of deal? Yes, Dish is solvent again, but the number of asterisks for that statement are higher than average. He was able to get out from under crushing debt. However, the current climate in DC that allowed as such is unusual and could not have been foreseen by Charlie a decade plus ago.

Dish can merge with Directv, though how much debt do they hold? And Boost is still Boost, but Boost needs a lot more subs added.

I am not sure if that $2 billion is a down payment or not.

As far as Boost goes, Charlie can now get serious about pushing it forward. We are probably going to see some good deals for all.

I am also sure that there is more to come from DISH, what it is I don't know. But my gut says we will have more news shortly.

Thanks Scott. I hope there is lots of beta testing going on!

And Dish, DirecTV, Cable TV is not?

Streaming Services are still a lot less expensive, plus the fact of all the extra/new scripted content you receive in both shows/movies, along with the same content that is on Paid Live TV, that is available with the streaming services.

This simply, if that word can be used, adds satellite to Boost, in similar or same manner as with, what is it, T-Mobile?, now advertising cell service with sat. So I would guess that in a way, even though the spectrum is sold, charlie's still employing it by continuing with boost including using musk-sold spectrum for the sat end of it. I then presume he's still using some spectrum he does not sell to continue with terrestrial mobile?

Somewhat ironic, charlie ending up having to go begging to another provider to offer satellite.

Dish needs more content.

Not sure what improvements can be made to a Hopper 4, other than imbedding the "new & improved" plus. And, of course, the most important feature!

I said all along that the FCC Carr wanted DISH to divest itself of the spectrum they have been sitting on for years. They will make all these deals sail through now. Charlie recognized that he won't be able to do business with this FCC and what they ultimately wanted and he saw the writing on the wall. He spent to much time on the build out of his 5g network and didn't have a way to raise more money from investors to finish his build out, so he cashed in on that bandwidth he had accumulated for years and wasn't using and now he is out of debt.
