A Federal Communications Commission (FCC) ongoing auction, the partnership between EchoStar Communications Corp. and DirecTV Group Inc., the top two satellite television providers in the nation, bid on 25 wireless licenses and won the bids for areas in the Mississippi Valley and central U.S.
Their offer totaled $31.2 million, according to news reports.
The companies have failed to announce publicly what they would do with the licenses if they won them.
Rumors of a merger between the two providers have been circulating. Englewood-based EchoStar (NASDAQ: DISH - News) attempted to purchase El Segundo, Calif.-based DirecTV (NYSE: DTV - News) three years ago, but the deal was thwarted by federal regulators concerned about violations of antitrust laws.
The FCC will sell a total of 1,122 licenses throughout the course of the auction. Analysts predict the event may raise $15 billion and last several weeks.
