What format are movies and show saved as on the hard drives?

A Dish encrypted format. You will not be able to (easily) load them on to your PC.....

Im not wanting to put them on my pc. I was wondering if I could put movies on the EHD and the receiver recognize them?

AFIK they are in a custom format that can only be read with a Dish receiver. The format of a 722 ehd and a 211 ehd are incompatible.

No, once you hook up the EHD to the receiver it gets formatted in a DishCentric way. It is no longer usable as a regular hard drive. The only thing that can go on it has to come from the receiver itself.

Your best bet is to burn your files to dvd and use your dvd player to watch them.
There is a free program that can convert video files to and from many formats including DVD.

I burn them to DVD now. I was just curious if I could skip that step. Oh well, I tried!

I think you have it the wrong way. The OP wants to go from computer to TV through the Dish receiver.

Actually what he wants to do is load movies from another source onto the EHD and then view them through the receiver. Not possible.
