Known for its beauty and grace, traditional Khmer dance has been attached to the <st1:Street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">Royal Khmer Court</st1:address></st1:Street> for more than one thousand years. The ballet almost disappeared during the Khmer Rouge Regime (1975-1979) when the dictatorship massacred artists, dancers and intellectuals who practiced traditions thought to be aristocratic institutions. The survival of this ancient dance faces the same fate today, as modern media, mass tourism and lack of funds again threaten its survival. This gripping one-hour documentary follows a troupe of young dancers as they learn the classical and stylized movements of traditional Khmer dance from those who escaped persecution during the Khmer Rouge Regime. It also reports on the 2003 UNESCO plan launched to safeguard the dance by building new schools, organizing shows, and communicating more about this tradition to the outside world.<O:p</O:p
