The first wave of cable’s next-generation cable modems, which promise downloads up to 160 megabits per second, are currently in the middle of certification testing by CableLabs and should be ready for early deployments in 2008.

I don't see any cable provider offering speeds near this speed in the U.S. so why release this now? To get ready for a massive increase in broadband speeds that they expect to have in the upcoming years? Why pay that much for a router when it is not needed yet?
