? for the future....tv's with digital tuners

The ATSC (digital) standard was set many years ago- 1997? 1999? And ATSC tuner chipsets are much cheaper now.

All newly manufactured or imported devices with an NTSC (analog) tuner are already required to have an ATSC (digital) tuner. This applies to VCRs, DVD recorders, OTA DVRs, TVs, whatever. I have yet to see a VCR with an ATSC tuner and I doubt we will- unless it is part of a VCR/DVD combo that has an NTSC tuner. Haven't seen one of those, either. Current on hand stock (even in a ...

There are a few VCRs with ATSC but not many. Several of these are DVHS VCR's..

Err- you will be able to have the same setup in the future. Your future TVs will likely continue to be able to receive analog NTSC signals. Current Dish 2 TV output boxes will continue to output in analog as they do today, and your TVs of today and tomorrow will be able to receive and display from TV2.

I think your answer is YES.

So the basic answer to my ? is no..........I will not be able have the same type of setup in the future

As often happens the question got lost. but between the RCA jacks and the continuation of support for anlog RF (though we are specualting on how long that will be tehre) you should be OK for some time to come.

Per Wiki: "By March 1, 2007 all televisions regardless of screen size, and all interface devices which include a tuner (VCR, DVD player/recorder, DVR) must include a built-in ATSC DTV tuner [as] specified in the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (CFR)"

One more time.

A large display (regardless of size) that has no tuner is not an HDTV so it does not have to have an ATSC tuner - this is a monitor.

A HDTV is a "monitor" that has a tuner, and HDTV's are required to have ATSC tuners.

Since most cable customers will continue to use NTSC TV's for next 10 years or so, maybe longer, there is no incentive to remove the NTSC tuner. Probably just the opposite.

Remember, more than 75% of all TV's are serviced by means other than OTA. Most of those means are NTSC.

I don't think anybody is arguing over the definition of "monitor" or that they will not be required to add an ATSC tuner.

So the basic answer to my ? is no..........I will not be able have the same type of setup in the future

As others have said, most new TV's will probably include NTSC tuners for some period of time. However, there are already some being sold with ATSC/QAM tuners only. That being said, you probably already have the solution sitting on a shelf somewhere in your house - an old VCR. You can use it as your "converter box" to convert NTSC RF to composite video/analog audio or (if it's S-VHS), to S-video/analog audio. If you don't have one sitting around, you can pick one up at a garage sale REALLY cheap! ;)
