Miami's art scene is a vibrant one, in part thanks to the efforts of the Rubell family, named among the top 200 collectors by ArtNews. Several area museums, galleries, and nonprofit spaces showcase art of the 1970s to 1990s, and the city of Miami actively supports public art projects. The Rubell Family Collection, housed in a former Drug Enforcement Agency warehouse, operates as a picture gallery, drawing from the permanent collection and changing exhibits twice a year. This volume, beautifully printed with 300 excellent color photographs, showcases the collection, which includes works by Louise Bourgeois, Donald Judd, Cindy Sherman, and many others. It opens with a brief introduction and interview with the Rubells by curator and director Coetzee. Unfortunately, the text fails to provide further essential context regarding Miami's art scene, how the Rubells collect (only briefly explained in the interview), and interpretation of the challenging and provocative art. Information on the works is limited to date and title. Including many installation views, this book may have greatest appeal for libraries serving exhibition designers and curators, although its audience could have been much wider.
