Getting billed for neighbor's PPV

I know I read about this in the forum before, but I can't find the thread now, so I figured I would ask if anyone else has heard about this happening and how it was resovled.

It seems my neighbor's UHF remote address was crossing with mine, which happens now and again and can be resolved by changing the address, however this time their PPV boxing event was charged to my reciever.

I called the CSR and he helped me changed the address on the UHF remote, but he wouldn't remove the PPV charge. He said PPV events are non-refundable. I am wondering if he didn't believe me. I told him that I didn't order this event and wanted to speak to a supervisor. Finally the CSR was told to do a "one time courtesy credit" and remove the charge. He said on my next bill I will see a charge for the event, followed by a credit. Knowing Dish Network, the credit won't be there and I will have to haggle with them again.

My question is, has this happend to anyone else and is it common? I can see channels changing through UHF frequency cross over, but ordering PPV events sounds very extreme. Is it possible someone could hack into my 622? Lastly, if this has happend to anyone else, did Dish Network remove the charge, or did you have to get mean with them?

I can believe your story is possible, I was able to get quite a distance from my 622 when I had dish and change the channels and menus and such with the UHF remote.

Instead of waiting for the bill to show up, why not check the website in a couple days to see what the RECENT ACTIVITY shows.

The very fist thing I did when I installed all my RF capable Dish boxes was immediately changed the RF address code. All should do the same as any neighbor's will be set to RF address 1.

This will get you into the 16-31 range.

Makes the chances of someone using yours less likely due to it pretty much being a hidden feature. Scott has a post on it.

It is not DISH's responsibility to change a remote address if your neighbors box interferes with your channel changing. You are liable for PPV ordered from your box, look in the history, if it shows your box ordered it you are liable.

Give the csr your neighbors name or phone number.. if the same PPV was on the neighbors account then, the csr can then see that odds are it was the truth. I'm sure thats not policy or anything, but wouldnt hurt to try and ask them if it happens again.

So instead of manually typing in 1-15, I arrow up.....if I continue to arrow up will I see 16-31?

I would also password protect your system so it won't happen again.

There's no need to password protect the system at this point. If the CSR waived a PPV fee the PPV account balance limit is set to zero. In other words if this person wants to order PPV again, they have to call it in, the remote order function should be disabled.

Ahaha me and my neighbor used to change each other's channels . . never though about ordering porn for each other though.

I have seen it happen a few times with the UHF Remote thing.

However most of the issues I see with PPV has to do with Porn! The thing about it is that most of the time it was actually ordered!!!!!

Its like one time when I installed a system for an elderly couple, the guy calls after 5 months to cancel because he claimed I lied to him because the bill has always been over $100/mo when I told him $39.99 for AT100.

This was before we had the phone line requirements and I knew none of his receivers where tied to telephone lines because I did not connect them.

I drove over to his house to check on the system and both receivers, and sure enough there was a phone line strung around the room to connect the receiver up and to download about a dozen or so Porn PPV movies that where still in the purchase history.

We went up to his grandsons room, and sure enough his receiver was now hooked up a phone line also with several more PPV events in the ordering history. The funney thing was that his grandson was actually watching a Porn movie as I was there because I flipped to a ppv channel and the movie was playing without asking me to confirm the purchase!.

We put locks on all the receivers and as I was leaving I could hear the grandfather beat the hell out of his grandson through the open window :D

changing remote address without unplugging your neighbors boxes first may not cure the channel war problem.

When changing remote address, make sure you do the initial steps at the receiver and not from your remote. Similarly when setting your pin, do at least the initial steps, if not all steps, from your receiver not your remote.

Thats pretty bad and he should be thrown in jail. Instead... I would have forced him to watch 4 hours of Barney for every hour of porn he ordered. Bet he wouldnt do it again.

It has nothing to do with the REMOTE!!!!

One of two things has happened:
1) someone in your house ordered the PPV
or
2) your neighbor's receiver is hooked up to your phone line.
so which is it?

That's my final answer!!!

What on earth are you talking about? It has everything to do with the remote as already discussed in this thread.

Your final answers are wrong

1 if the remotes are on the same address the receiver does not know if it is someone in the house or next door ordering the ppv

2 if my neighbors receiver is hooked to my phone line I will not get billed for anything he orders, you can hook your receiver to any phone line but only the account the receiver is tied to will get billed for it.

I have ordered ppv movies while in an RV campground, conected my receiver to the ph. line in the campground, trust me I paid for that movie not the campground

This reminds me of when cordless phones were just gaining mass popularity, all still analog, only about 10 chanels or so. I moved in a large apartment building, & before I had the phone turned on I had a dial tone, & could make calls from other peoples line in the building.

When I had my phone turned on I only had a hard wired phone connected but kept the cordless charged for when I needed to make those long distant calls I couldn't afford.

A girl that lived in the building listened to everybodys phone calls in the building on her baby monitor.
