Hello I got 3 dishnetwork cards in the mail yesterday and was wanting to know what they are for? I have two vip 722 and one 511. Do I have to install them? Will they give me more channels? I didn't think you needed the cards anymore. Thanks Kevin

Of course you have to install them! Didn't you read the sheet that they were stuck too? Every so often, Dish issues new cards with new security to hack proof their systems. For a little while anyways. If you don't install the cards within the time period, your receivers will stop working. Takes about 30 seconds per receiver. Follow the instructions!

Sorry

Sorry for asking. I'm not home and the person getting my mail said I got them so I haven't even seen them yet. I can't be on computer long to do a search about them but I will when I get home monday.

Sorry for asking...

No need to apologize. Those of us who "live" on this board assume it is common knowledge. Yes, you could browse this site pretty briefly and find out all you want to know, but I understand the occasional "post from the hip", so don't sweat it. And although I'm sure jwgreen68 didn't intend to sound as scathing as he did, he's correct---just read the enclosed literature and follow the instructions. It is simple.

As jwgreen68 pointed out, it is necessary to install the cards for security reasons (on DISH's part). You will not gain more channels or features. You will, however, lose programming if you wait too long to install the cards (I think the literature says 2 weeks from receipt of the mailing).

Now, if you want to read in depth as to the purpose of the cards, then you need to scour the forums...

I will say I've been expecting new smart cards and haven't seen them yet for either of my receivers.

I don't have any idea what procedure E* is using for deciding who gets the cards and when. I had one of the last 722s before they started issuing the ones with the new security codes onboard. I'm always in the last group for software updates but I got my cards a couple weeks ago. I had no advanced notice. Some had said they had received a phone call in advance or had something in their guide. I didn't have either of those.

I think it was more that the cards are attached to a sheet that explains exactly what to do. It's not like they come loose in an envelope. And he said he got them yesterday, so it didn't seem too "from the hip."

And I don't see how JW was being "scathing". Apparently, people can't use an exclamation point anymore without worrying about hurting someone's feelings.
