Happy 30th anniversary to Dish!

We have been with Dish since 1998. I didn't know they were around for only two years when we started. I remember going to a local business and buying our dish and receiver. I installed the dish myself on our TV antenna tower. Pretty simple installation at the time. Of course, I was 28 years younger back then!

So true! I have been with Dish since 2009, and when I did my own install, it was a lot easier 17 years ago than it would be for me right now!

They got such an explosive start that, along with DTV having already been out a couple years when they launched (and Primestar 3-4), it could easily have left the impression of having been around awhile. $20 for cable, er, $19.99, attracted attention. Wouldn't stay that low for too long.

I remember my 1st DiSH install- 2 rx's!

'Course they're saying in some of their own ads now 45 yrs...

Will anyone admit to having had Primestar?

Customers when Dish started purchased had to buy the Equipment, had to install that equipment, which I am incredibly clumsy. I would have fallen off the roof. Not a good thing to admit, but I know it's true. My Parents did have Primestar, and hated it. They did go to Dish, and loved it. Being way out in the Country and having Dish was a wonderful thing for them. They got me to get Dish and with them since 2001, with the exception of going with DTV for a year.

Will anyone admit to having had Primestar?
I had Primestar in 1995 till January of 1997. We had an ice storm and it caused the electricity to brown out and cut off and on for that last day before we were without power for 3 days and the receiver started smoking. When we were back up after the storm I had a satellite guy from Primestar come out and he asked me if I was happy with Primestar and he knew of a new company that was so much better and he told me about DISH and that it was so much cheaper.

So we went to Beaumont to a physical store that sold DISH /DIRECTV and Primestar and used their receiver to see what they had. We wanted to be able to see Star Trek Voyager since it went from our local CBS affiliate to a cable channel we didn't get. So DISH had it on their Super stations and we also got East /west coast locals all for like $8.00 a month.

They came out the next day and we had 2 receivers installed and they used the old Prime Star pole to put the satellite dish on. That lasted till after Hurricane Rita came through and the pole had rusted out and broke off at the ground. Then installed my own satellite dish in 2005 and then the eastern arc dish I installed in 2008. I also changed to the DISH 1000.2 and installed it . I bought all my own receivers from DISH Depot.com and it became my hobby. Trading in my old ones for credit towards new ones. I even installed my hopper set up myself and it is still there if I want to go back.

Stayed with DISH for 25 years till February of 2022. We actually had 3 accounts in my name for my parents , my aunt and us for years. But finally they got tired of price hikes every year and they all went to something else streaming.

I got Dish in 2005, and it was really great at that time. I loved the VOOM channels and still have a number of recordings, and when I play them it's obvious that back then, Dish provided a better PQ.
How long were the voom ch's on? A couple months? Where are they now?

Primestar was cable's faux DBS that the cablers hurriedly put together as they saw true cable-independent high-power DBS coming together in the early 90s. Was still going strong in '95 even after DTV debuted simply because it still cost a few $100 to get DTV, especially with installation, whilst Big cable basically put in primestar for free. Then the gov't basically outlawed Primestar as anticompetitive- DBS was needed as competition to cable, not to both cable and cable's satellite. So then in around '97 the cablers put Primestar (actually, its customers) up for sale to a DBS operator, and DTV won the bid over charlie. C's idea was that he & his minions (dealers, gas stations, etc) would get plenty of voluntary conversions to DiSH instead of DTV and not have to pay.

I'm convinced that DiSH thought they'd just captured the golden goose and that they could just put hardware out there through all kinds of shysters looking for activation payments and folks would by some hook or crook manage to get a picture. They had bigtime DTV envy and obviously had observed them doing basically the same. At the same time they were telling us, the dealers, that it was going to be all different about satisfying cx's. But when folks called them for a referral to get the service, they just direct-sold them hardware- they never referred a local authorized dealer! I would come to find out they thought that saved them money

Was going through some things and cam upon the DVD, Dish allowed us to keep when Blockbuster via mail was winding down, back then I had high hopes that it would a good linkage to keep Blockbuster, obviously times change but I thought it could be a good connection

They take channels off all the time. They used to use FSTV in the 9000 range back years ago and they got rid of those channels for customers. I think they still have the channel but it moved down to the lower number 200 range. So they can add and take away and move them as they want.

Been with Dish continuously since several months after their start date. I don't now remember exactly what month. Been with Satelliteguys from within a day of the launch coming from DBSForums.

Through everything DISH has gone through, it has been reliable for me. Heavy Storm head aside which on the Western Arc is not often, I honestly think I can count on one hand outages I have had in all these years. It would take hundreds of hands for how many times Cable has gone out over that time.
My best memory is Charlie circumventing everyone and actually adding Distant channels instead of having none as ordered through a third party.

Having the current customer discount over many years has resulted in paying a more reasonable price. And DISH participates in most networks with apps allowing to use those apps for free.
I STILL use VIP receivers, best thing to happen was no more updates to them, have been rock solid.

Also heres my super relocated to a pole. The tree needed to be trimmed by the city for the power lines. Getting 84% on 110 77% 119 pretty good
