hi, i am switching to hd tv through dish network and want to buy my own receivers. any suggestions on cheap hd receivers i could buy that would work on the dish network, and possibly where to get them? thanks, maryjo:)

Dont buy any receivers , I have had dish for 10 plus years and always bought my own receivers. I now have a a few that are old and and dont have any good features and are basically worth nothing. I bought a 921 HD DVR $599 like 2.5 years ago, dish just replaced it with a 722 (leased) for free they wanted to give me 10 dollars for a 921 no thanks Ill keep it for 10 bucks. The lease costs the same if you own or lease. Save your cash for a new HDTV. Also throw up a new ota antenna if you dont have one, it will give you a few more channels as well as a 3rd tuner for recording options.

Ebay is probually your cheapest source. Ive bought several receivers off ebay and never had a problem. I usually sell them once something new comes out so I get a good share of the money back. If you keep it them forever then yeah they wont be worth much. Leasing has advantages too. All depends on your preference.

Leasing is better, money-wise but one hitch to be aware of.

As a new customer you ought to get a great deal with maybe two HD-DVRs plus the dish and professional installation for ninety-nine bucks. But check because they have different deals every day of the week, it seems.

Now the sticky part: When they bring out a super new receiver and you want to up grade or maybe add another receiver you go for a program called "Dishin it up" that usually means you get a free upgrade of your present equipment or maybe forty-nine bucks for an additional top end HD DVR.

However... You can only "Dishin it up" once every twelve months. Not too restrictive but just something to know so three months after you sign up and call to ask how much for another DVR and they tell you 599 bucks you don't cuss out the CSR and run here and post awful things about the parentage of the dumb-a** CSR.

One last important but totally incomprehensible fact:

The first receiver on your account doesn't cost anything per month but the second, third and so on cost five, six or seven bucks a month to lease -OR- (get this!!!) five, six or seven bucks a month "extra receiver fee" if you own the equipment. (The price range is for SD, HD or HDDVR receivers)

If you know the rules of the game before you sign up you'll be happier with Dish than the other sat guy. The receivers are by far the best of any Sat or Cable company's offerings.
