jimbo, just be grateful, it didn't blow up on you like mine did! okay, it didn't actually blow-up, it just croaked!

Just out of curiousity, is this going out to everyone? I thought the CE releases were special? My brand new HR20-700 (installed last Sunday) received an update at 2 am Thurs morning. It's 0x168 and I did nothing. I am not complaining, it seems to work very well and I do like the new lighter menu.

That's the latest national release, not a CE.

Directv just did an automatic upgrade at 4:46 am on my Hr-20.It works better now then before.Channels changing is faster, and there is a new menu display!

Good let us know when its up so we can dig in! :)

Scott,
The -700 normally take about 15-20 minutes, depending on what they are adding, I got a late start tonight (11:05) it's still loading, after looking at the progress bar, I am on step 2 of the reboot half way, so it should not be too much longer.

I normally don't watch the download once it is started, just wait to hear live TV again.
Of course it hangs at 90 % for abit as they all do, thats normal.
I think I heard that the beginnig stages is collecting the data and when it gets to the 90 % it is actually executing the software.

I'm back up to Live Tv now.

I recommend folks to try out the Cutting Edge extra features of this release. You can access using the following steps.

1. Menu - Search - Keyword
2. Type IAMANEDGECUTTER
3. Continue
4. Select ALL in category
5. Done
6. On the front panel of receiver, select INFO and MENU at the same time.

You should see your options. The Playlist Sort has been there for a few months but allows you to sort your recorded programs a bunch of different ways. I like Title (A-Z).

The new one is FFW Correction which is set to OFF by default. If set to ON it compensates the user response time when pressing PLAY key. So far, I like it. Seems to smooth things out a tad. Still some room to smooth out Trick Play a bit when using OTA HD or MPEG4 HD but the CE releases are working great on Trick Play for SD and MPEG2 HD for me.

I notice that my Media Center Options are no longer in the list.

Is this because I did the IAMANEDGECUTTER?

I did a test of my network and its working. Yet I dont have any options in my menus to access my media from my PC.

New Media Navigation in this release. Still slow with a large library but I like the bigger screen setup with PIP in corner.

Wait a minute and the server should show up. If not, redo your network again and it should show after a few minutes. I've seen mine dissapear several times before only to reappear suddenly.

how do you download updates????

Here's how to force download it.

First, you will need to restart your receiver. There are multiple methods to doing this, but the preferred method is to use the menus. Also, make sure its in a format that can be read on whatever TV you need. I usually set mine to 480p since that is available on all my TVs. To restart your receiver, you can do one of the following:

  • Using the remote control, select Menu -> Help & Settings -> Setup -> Reset, and then choose Restart Recorder. You will also need to press the DASH (-) key to confirm. This is the safest way to do a reset.
  • If the Menu reset fails, then try a Red Button Reset (RBR). Press the Red Button behind the access card door on the front of the receiver.
  • If all else fails and you are unable to initiate the download process, you may need to unplug the receiver from the wall outlet, wait for 30 seconds and then plug it back in.
Once you have restarted your recorder, make sure you stick around. In a few seconds, you will need to type in a special code to start the download process:

  1. When the reset process starts, the LEDs on the front of the receiver will turn off.
  2. Once the LEDs on the front of the receiver illuminate again *OR* the the first blue screen is displayed (whichever comes first), you can start keying in the special code. I prefer using the LED if you can see the receiver. If you do this remotely over Slingbox or from another room, you have to wait for the first blue screen to appear.
  3. Press 0 2 4 6 8. You will need to press the keys slowly and deliberately. An easy way to think of this is zero-one-thousand, two-one-thousand, four-one-thousand, six-one-thousand, eight-one-thousand. Make sure that you ONLY type in the 5 numbers and nothing else.
  4. After a few more seconds, you should see a screen that indicates that the download process has started.
  5. Now, just sit back and relax as the update process will take about 15 minutes to complete. It may appear to "stick" at 97%, this is normal.

Note: Do not restart the system again after the download process is complete. The normal download process includes an automated restart which is desired, but additional restarts are unnecessary and only serve to taint the debug process.

Note: If you reach the screen that says "checking satellite settings step 1 of 2" BEFORE you see an indication that the new software is downloading, then you will need to start over. The downloading screen should show up within a few seconds (it's not immediate). If it does go too far, then a Red Button Reset should make it start over without going through the entire startup process.

I forgot to mention the process goes better with a few beers on hand.

Brewer,
I just did this and it seems to be a nice inprovement to the way it was before.
I wonder how long it will be till it is available on the -100 ....

Check this out. When you pick pictures you can add music to play along with it. How cool is that!
