Are there any lists of what broadcasts are actually sending before it hits cable/satellite networks?

For example, I've heard that the History Channel is only on a 465 MHz system so their source material is going to require a much lower bitrate to retransmit, etc. Also, are the broadcasting in MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 from the source?

I'm just curious about comparing my local digital cable signals versus the source to see how much it is recompressed (if any).
