All I want is a duel tuner dvr.

I told the Dish account specialist I was transferred to that I was intending on moving over to DTV, but offered to stay with them if I could get a duel tuner dvr without any cost to me.

She said it would cost $100 and I would get $25 credit for each owned receiver I return, so my total cost would be $50.

I explained to her the bells and whistles of DTV current offer and that dish is making it hard to keep me as a customer.

She said she was sorry, but that was the best offer she could do.

She told me that DTV charges $1 more on their DVR fee, I explain to her that Dish's fees are going up as well.

My E dish is mounted on a pole, aimed between my house and a grove of trees.

If I remove my E dish, shouldn't the dtv dish work in the same spot ?

Any comments before I switch?

It depends. I assume you have a Dish500 which looks at 110 and 119 orbital slots. D*'s main position is a 101, a bit farther east in the sky, plus with a phase III dish also gets 110 and 119. And to mess it up a bit more, D*'s also is supposed to start using their new AT-9 dish for new installs ( according to another thread that I've seen) starting about 2/1, and that dish also looks at 99 and 103 in addition to 101/110/119. So I guess it will depend on if you have a clear view farther east from your current pole.

Remember, D* will be very accommodating "the first time" (as was E*) Both companies give better deals to "new virgin" subs than to existing subs. After your "first time" You don't get "virgin rates" again, ever with E* or D*;)

Companies still don't get it. They have a hard enough time getting that new customers but they fail to fully understand that getting that customer isn't as hard not even close as keeping that customer. My cable company BHN happens to be one of the cheapest companies I've ever dealt with. I used to have all digital cable services, high speed internet and digital phone service. Because I had that triple play I also added their upgraded 15Mbps internet teir for 10 bucks extra per month. I was getting a discount for the TV service for one year which was only 20 bucks a month difference with tax. Well when it ran out I called to get the same deal that I had and they said no. I nicely told them to cancel my digital phone service and cancel my speed upgrade. They threw away 40 bucks a month to save twenty. What companies should do is tell the customer that its our policy that any customer that cancels a service should be transferred to a supervisor. If they gave this excuse I would have waited and once they know a customer will cancel they as the supervisor should just offer that discount. I just never understood how they can throw away extra profits just so they could make a bigger profit. Even cutting off those services my bill is still over 200 bucks a month. So they get 200 bucks a month for just offering digital cable and internet service so that alone should warrant a little discount on the digital phone service which by the way is a very high profit product or so I've been told...its a very very very high profit service which is why they would rather not discount it.

Well enough about my case but my case was a pure easy example of the way these "stupid" companies think. I know they are in business to make money but they also aren't in business to throw money away either.

There Are Some Major Differences With The Dvrs Between Directv And Dishnetwork. Dishnetwork Has A 625 That Is One Box That Will Run 2 Tvs And Record On Both. You Pay 4.99 Dvr Fee But No 2nd Tv Cost. (dvr Fee Is Going Up Feb. 1st To 5.99, Same As Dtv. Directv's Dvr Will Only Run One Tv But You Can Record Something And Watch Something Else At The Same Time In Live Tv, However This Dvr Takes Two Lines In, Phone Line Always Connected Or It Won't Work, If You Don't Have Those Things It Wont Work. Dishnetworks Dish It Up Promo Is Changing Feb. 1st, Depending On How Long You Have Been On And In Good Standings There Are Three Tiers, 1-a, 2-b, 3-c, Worst Cost Will Be 100, Least Around 30-40, This Would Include Possibly Up To Two Individual Receivers Or One Dual Tuner, Excluding The 622 (hd-dvr) Combo That Will Be 299.99, I Hope This Helps, Good Luck!

Thanks for the info! The info on the dtv dvr not controlling two tv' s is a big help!

So basically you save $50.00 with D* on the front end by switching. But you end up paying $120.00 more over the 2 year Term with D* because you need 2 receivers to run 2 tv's.

So you are spending $70.00 more!

Look both E* and D* pay out big bucks to get a customer. Last I saw it was over $600.00 per sub. So if you are getting the basic package in programing, how long do you think it takes these companies to get their money back? Maybe then you can understand why they won't upgrade for free all the time.

OK, I'm rethinking switching. I've just been pissed with dish the last couple of weeks because of customer service. (see my last post )
I just feel like being a martyr.
Does anybody know if the upgrade to the 522/625 will go away Feb 1st and if I do upgrade any idea how long I would be able to use the box before being forced to a new box?
I'm sitting on the fence with the HDTV thing, so it's not that important to me if the upgrade can last a couple of years.

It's doubtful that the 522/625 receivers are going to go away anytime soon insofar as SD programming is concerned. They can handle 8PSK Turbo so that should help things out a bit. I don't see Dish converting all of their programming to MPEG4 for at least 3-4 years. Here's my speculation on how they're going to do the conversion (first part is pretty much confirmed):

1) Make new HD programming MPEG4 only
2) Gradually convert existing HD programming to MPEG4
3) Convert premium SD programming starting with the movie packages and work down
4) Convert standard SD programming starting at AT180 and work down

This way they get to roll out the upgrades in tiers rather than try and upgrade everybody at once.

Just wait it out.. Im also waiting what the "real deal" will be. We won't know until it happens... Getting upset will not change anything...

see if you can get a different CSR to give you a $4 service credit for 1 year, or something like that. For dish to provide rebates or equipment for free is less palatable than to lock you in at a discount for a year.

Just make sure to have any deal you make faxed to you in hard form so if it "stops" you have ammo.

I've got 3 old receivers I can return for $75 toward a Vip622 (5000, JVC-DVHS, 6000), but don't plan on giving them a 721 for $25. I can sell that one for more. Of course I'll keep it as a backup for a little while until I'm sure the 622 actually works.
