NOVEMBER 29, 2006 -
At the eleventh hour, Pappas Telecasting reached a long-term carriage agreement with Echostar's DISH Network. The news came Thursday, one day after Pappas said it was prepared to pull 15 network-affiliated stations in 11 markets beginning Friday, Dec. 1. The agreement, beginning Dec. 1 and running through Nov. 30, 2011, affects nearly two million DISH subscribers.
Financial terms were not disclosed. In its public statements, Pappas said the company was looking for compensation that fairly valued the audience that its signals deliver. “We appreciate the fact that DISH has recognized the value of our stations to their subscribers. We have reached an agreement that contains all of the economic terms that we had been seeking,” said Harry Pappas, chairman and CEO of Pappas.
As part of the agreement, The CW network affiliate KCWL in Lincoln, operated with the Omaha World-Herald and Pappas’ Azteca America affiliate KAZR in Reno, will be added to DISH’s local channel package beginning Feb. 1, 2007. KUNO-TV, a sister station to KTNC in San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose will be added to DISH’s local channel lineup in the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose and Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto markets when separate programming is launched on KUNO-TV.
