Didn't see this in a search. Sorry if it's common knowledge. Bought a Belkin Power Meter Conserve Insight to test my electrical use for plugin items.

My HR20-100 uses about 43 watts when on. (About $3.79 a month where I am). The real surprise for me was when it was off (standby). 41.5 when in standby. Hardly any difference.

I'll test my HR20-700 later.

The hard drive accounts for most of that. It can't spin down because the live buffer is running even while the DVR is in standby.

About the only difference in on vs. standby is the lights and video output.

That said, Directv DVRs are energy star certified and supposed to be some of the best power management in the industry, at least that is what I've read.

D* DVRs are NEVER OFF, for the reason that Jersey mentioned, hard drive always is active for the buffer.

Take that device and put it on your A/V recvr once and see what happens !
