Hi everyone,

I am trying to lock on IA5 97W, I am using a 80cm dish with a single KUL1 linear LNB, Coolsat 6K receiver, SF-95 meter, location is Charleston, SC.

Problem: After 3 hours I was finally able to get a 92 quality reading on the 11898 transpoder (V), the screen showed that I was on IA5, was able to get a green quality bar on two other transpoders but when I did a scan I got no FTA channels but instead over 100 scrambled channels. I am trying to view FTA international channels located on IA5. I then scanned through the satellite list and was surprised to get a lock (green quality bar) on the 113 and 119 satellites!

What am I doing wrong? The menue shows a high quality reading on the IA5 satellite so why don't I get any FTA channels? HELP!!!

the channels your scanning in, are they from 97.0w ?

are you doing a blindscan ? if not, try that. you have factory firmware on there right ? not some hacked up firmware that some other dolt put on there.

Doesn't sound like you are on 97. Your receiver doesn't really know what satellite you are searching for, just the transponders/frequencies that are on that satellite at the time the list was made. More than one satellite may use the same or close to the same transponder/frequency (as evidenced by your signal quality on other satellites).

After a blind scan, check and see if there are any FTA channels and make a note of their transponder/frequency and then go to lyngsat.com and try to find the satellite they are on. If you don't have any FTA channels, make a note of all the transponders/frequencies that you get signal quality on, and then go to lyngsat.com and look for a satellite which has a similar listing.

sounds like the OP might be on a DBS satellite, either 91 (probably) or 110.

As noted above, do a blind scan and see what channels pop up. Then we can tell what satellite you're at

Thank you so much for the help.

I did a blind scan and came up with no FTA channels, all were paid channels. I did get one advertising channel that came up telling me that I got the Dish N (Satellite 121)! I also got about 10 radio stations but still no FTA at all.

As for the firmware I am not really sure what I got!!

I also got some paid channels with an I5 next to them, I assume that means IA5?

According to the info below generated by Satellite Finder, your dish is pointed too low and also pointed too far west for your location..

Elevation for 121 = 32 degrees
Elevation for 97 = 47.6 degrees

Increase the elevation on your dish by 15.6 degrees and move it east :)

(Sorry for the bad formatting below.. I couldn't get the fonts to work right, but I think you'll get the idea)

I also got some paid channels with an I5 next to them, I assume that means IA5?

Nope, you are on 121 (Echostar 9), and as Davage notes, you have to raise the elevation and move to the east.

In your receiver, does the IA5 transponder you where using to point with have the following: 11898 V 20000
If it does, it should be: 11898 V 22000

Set the elv of the sat and swing the dish till you get signal. Now note that 95 W has more power then 97 W so you may find it first? If you do than watch the quility meter in you reciever and move the dish to the right just a tad till you lose the picture. Then rescan.

Good luck!

Get IA5

OK. Get on Transponder 12177. This is probably one of strongest transponders. If it's not already programmed in the receiver, use the following info to program it:

Freq: 12177
Symbol Rate: 23000
Polarization: VER

If you are standing behind the dish, move up and left a little and you should hit it from the location you previously had.

Make sure to setup your LNBF polarization properly, and make sure you have the correct LO freq. in the receiver also. Do this and you should be good to go.

Also, make sure the LNBF is setup correctly in your receiver.

The KUL1 LNBF is a standard linear KU LNBF with LO freq 10750

You guys are awesome. Thank you for your help, I will try it once the rain stops and report back. Thanks again all...

Okay, I was able to lock on IA5, TP 11991, 12092, 12176 but I am not able to get a lock on the other TPs! I did a blind scan and got some FTA but not the rest of the FTA channels that I like to have (most of them are on TP12146). I tried adjusting the dish and the LNB but still got nothing on the other TPs! Any words of advise here please?

Are you adjusting both east-west and elevation? 12092 and 12176 are two of the stronger transponders, so you are close. Make sure to mark your present position (elevation and east-west) on the dish mount with a marker so you can always go back to it as your starting point. Also, make sure you are making just tiny adjustments. If 12092 and 12176 are about equal in strength, then you have the skew correct (at least I get them at about the same strength, but I am north of your position).

Yes, I marked the position and kept adjusting in all directions but still got nothing, it is so frustrating to get this satellite right!! Is it possible that something is wrong with my receiver??

It doesn't sound like a receiver problem, as you got high signal quality when you were pointed at 121. As well, you are getting both horizontal and vertical transponders on IA5 (which also means the LNB is probably OK). Only other thing I can think of is possible LOS (line of sight) issues. Are you shooting into clear sky? Nothing above where it looks like the dish is pointing (signals are actually coming from much higher than it looks)?

Have you tried moving the LNB toward or away from the dish in its holder (usually as far back as possible is the best)?

I have a clear view but some clouds. I will try moving the LNB as suggested and see what I get. Thank you so much.
