SatelliteGuys.US DishNetwork Uplink Activity Report - Week Ending 03/17/2007

In theory Dish would change the TPs to 8PSK at the same time they change them to MPEG-4, after all, all MPEG-4 receivers can do 8PSK. Of course this is on their main satellites with strong enough TPs to do 8PSK. This would give them 30-40% more capacity per TP before MPEG-4. They could add 30-40% more channels to a TP and get better PQ with MPEG-4.

All depends on how they want to spend their bit budget and their receiver upgrade budget. If they spent the $$ to upgrade everyone to MPEG-4 receivers they could in theory add tons of new markets on spots since they could fit more channels, and could add a lot more HD LIL markets. They could probably use 1/2 the TPs they use now for standard definition and keep similar PQ with 8PSK/MPEG4 getting 24 channels/TP.

This would free up a lot of TPs for HD which they are compressing with MPEG-4 also. This could be a way to keep up with DIRECTV's plans of world domination with their new satellites.

Completely agree. We've all known for a long time that MPEG-4 was coming. The sooner it comes the better for all of us in the long run.

I'm not sure why they added the Portland locals again...I bet they are only mirrors but what for?

I'll take a guess. SD mirrors for Bend Oregon or one of the counties in Oregon that went from Portland to Eugene recently but still close enough to be in grade B region of Bend NBC affiliate. This is why only ABC, CBS, Fox, PBS and MyTV are mirrored.

Again, just a guess.

See ya

usually it's around 3:00 central time though isn't it? :)

But now that there was a Time Change, who knows lol :D

Ya, i guess you are correct.. (i just checked couple previous reports)

But often they do it whenever they feel like it or choose to, though... - as 1 PM Central, etc was NOT written in stone :)

Sometimes they do it few times a day, early Thursday morning even, etc

Wow, no uplinks today?? They must be preparing for a huge uplink tomorrow. :haha rotfl :haha

going to "move" does dish use spotbeams for locals?

Help!!!
