I am having a 622 sent out Saturday to replace my 211 and 311. I assume, since I will be running 2 tvs from 1 receiver, that it will need to run in Dual-Mode. Is this correct? If it is running in dual mode then how does recording work. Can TV1 still record 2 sat programs at once or does 1 need to be set up to record on TV2? If dual mode will not work for that, how hard is it to switch from dual mode to single mode and vice versa? Is there anything else I should know about running 2 tvs with a single 622?

You will need dual mode to watch seperate programming on each tv. Single you can watch the same channel on both.

Yes, you can record 2 sat at once in dual mode. It will automatically pick the free tuner if a recording is already set for that time.

Swithching mode is done on the front panel of the 622.

When in dual mode TV1 can record a sat program and an OTA at the same time. Then you can have TV2 record another sat program.

Then in single mode TV1 does all the recording for all three.

Switching between the two involves pushing a button on the front of the receiver. Not hard at all. One note it is easy to get confused between what tuner 1 and tuner 2 can do and what TV1 and TV2 can do.

One thing that I believe you miss in dual mode is the PiP function. It comes in handy watching sports.

Do you intend to connect TV2 by coax or via another method? W

Good luck with it no matter what mode you choose.

TV2 will be conncected via coax.

Then remember that when sending via coax you will need to find a free UHF frequency. the good news is that if you have one you could combine that signal with that of an OTA antenna. But no matter how you send the signal out it is SD not HD some folks don't realize that and are disappointed.

Oh, I know TV2 will not be hd. My second tv is a little 19" sd so I'm not worried about that. And I'm not sending any antenna to it so I won't have to worry about finding a frequency.

Under those circumstances you will likely be happy with it. And if you do it from day one you wuill never miss the Pip functions etc.

I have a similar setup. Since it is usually just me watching from either location, I just leave it in the Single mode and activate the "Shared view" feature. That gives me the same programming with PIP function on both TVs, and the UHF remote (remote 2) will work the whole package from either location. On those rare occasions when there are 2 viewers wanting to see different programs, that's when I put it into the Dual mode...

Also - over the coax you will actually have 2 signals to receive, TV1 and TV2. The default channel settings are "Air" mode channels 60 and 62, IIRC, chosen because those frequencies are above the current UHF channel spectrum. But at those higher frequencies you have more loss and it's harder to send the channels over a whole-house antenna system, etc. You should choose lower channels that are not adjacent to themselves or other channels in your locality or on your distribution sustem. I use 22 and 24. The system also has a "cable" mode in case you want to try to mix those 622 TV2 signals with analog CATV channels in their spectrum.

Here's a link to the on-line User's Guide for the 622, for your advance reading pleasure:

I think this is what I will do also. The only time we use TV2 is when we are going to bed. So with Shared View you have full control of all 3 tuners from either TV, right?

Actually - I think there may be some "issue" regarding availability of the OTA tuner from the TV2 location, something about the OTA tuner being beholden to the TV1 location (?). I don't know because I don't use that tuner. But IIRC there was a workaround: You can start a recording of the OTA tuner from TV1 then watch the recorded program (with only a slight delay) from the TV2 location. Someone else with firsthand experience can weigh-in on this one...

I am pretty sure that in the shared view mode that restriction goes away because TV 2 gets ann SD version of the TV 1 output.

Are you losing the Pre-scheduling programming on 622?
