Stan Lee confirms that a Black Panther movie is in the works

Stan Lee, the well known creator of many of the world’s greatest comic characters and the king of cameos, may have let it slip that Marvel Studios are definitely working on a film based on Black Panther. Comic Book Resources quoted Lee at the Fan Expo Canada saying, “We haven’t made a Black Widow movie but she’s been in some of our movies, and she will be featured more prominently as we move forward,” Lee said. “And the chances are she will have her own movie because eventually all the superheroes are going to have their own movies. They are already working on Ant-Man, Dr. Strange and the Black Panther and there are others I am not allowed to talk about”.
This is exciting news for multiple reasons. First there has been a little bit of outcry for more diversity in superhero films. Captain America: The Winter Solider introduced Falcon, comic’s first African American superhero, to the film world, but outside of the Blade films, there have been no major Marvel or DC films with black characters headlining. Black Panther is actually the first black superhero in mainstream American comics.Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige recently told IGN that he is very interested in bringing the character to screen along with Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel (formally known as Ms. Marvel). “They’re both characters that we like, that development work has been done, it’s continuing to be done on, and certainly it’s the question I get asked more than anything else, more than Iron Man 4, more than Avengers 3”, Feige said in regards to fan demand for both characters.
Diversity in superhero films is wonderful, but besides that point, Black Panther is simply a great character and plays an important role in the Marvel universe. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the character first appeared in the pages of Fantastic Four #52 in 1966. The title of Black Panther is given to the king/queen and protector of the small, but powerful and technologically advanced fictional African nation of Wakanda. The nation’s most valuable resource is the extremely rare metal, vibranium, which is the material that makes up Captain America’s shield.
T’Challa, the Black Panther, is not only a noble, wise, and kindhearted ruler, but also one of the world’s most gifted geniuses. Since early in 2013, T’Challa has been a member of a secret group known as the Illuminati, a small gathering of the world’s smartest heroes, who have been working behind the scenes of some of Marvel’s largest events. The team also currently includes Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Namor, Hulk, Beast, and Black Bolt. Professor X was a founding member until his death in Avengers Vs. X-men. T’Challa was actually approached to be on the original team as a founding member, but refused after stating that the group could only do harm with so much power (which turned out to be a fair assessment on his part).
