T-Mobile: iPhone and Death of Subsidies Coming Soon And LTE Network May Arrive This Month

By killing off the subsides does that mean there's no contract to abide by? If you choose to stop paying for your phone every month does it go back to TMobile with no penalty?

conjecture

It's already been said the T-mobile iPhone won't be an existing handset.
But since there are three variations of the iPhone 5 already, a fourth might be the quickest to market.
Technically, that would be in conflict with the first claim.

Will the *next* iPhone model include a Tmo variant? (by summer)
Seems a little soon to put the iPhone 5 into the history books. ;)

As for the unsubsidized phone plan, there doesn't seem to be a provision to pay off the handset early.
Sounds to me like they just want to tie you to their service longer.
Not quite the consumer-friendly plan they claim. :)

WSJ has an article that Apple is developing a low cost iPhone with features like an all plastic body to cut costs.

It is probably subscription only.

The cheaper phone could resemble the standard iPhone, with a different, less-expensive body, one of the people said.

One possibility under consideration is lowering the cost of the device by using a different shell made of polycarbonate plastic; in contrast, the iPhone 5 currently has an aluminum housing.

Selling multiple new iPhone models would be something new for Apple. Under former Chief Executive Steve Jobs, Apple prided itself on prioritizing profits over scale and offered a relatively small number of products mostly targeted at the high end.
