I dropped Voom last year when I woke up and saw the writing on the wall that they were never going to release their HD-DVR. Yes I have missed Rave, UHD, Equator and few other Voom HD channels, but this is what I've been watching, and recording in HD ever since.

Desperate Housewives
Boston Legal
Crossing Jordan
L&O Criminal Intent
Grey's Anatomy
Still Standing
Listen Up
Everybody loves raymond
Two & half men
24
American Idol
CSI Miami
Medium
NCIS
L&O SVU
NYPD Blue / Blind Justice
Lost
Alias
Eyes
L&O
Jake in Progress
CSI
Without a Trace
ER
Third Watch
Medical Investigation
Numbers
8 Simple Rules
Joan of Arcadia
JAG
The Tonight Show

+ ability to automatically record other SD shows.

When do I find time to watch them? .. easy .. I work at home a lot and by skipping commercials, you can watch a 30min show in 17 minutes and an hour show in 40 mins. I also do not watch shows when they are on. That takes too much time and I deplore commercials!

Tivo is the DVR pioneer but my time warner cable hd dvr is hard to beat.

Kemguy.

[VOOM] Re: There is plenty of HD content without Voom!

Kemguy is 100% correct in his assessment!
Lack of a simple DVR was ALOT of the reason for measly sub numbers.
Of course since this is a VOOM forum (until its demise on May 1st) I
don't expect much support.

Don't forget you can watch an nfl/nba game in 1 hour too (minus all
the commercials/haltime hoopla/wasted playtime during actual game
time).

RE: [VOOM] Re: There is plenty of HD content without Voom!

Not sure I agree with the "A LOT" statement. Comcast has only had DVRs
available for 4 months in my area and it hasn't hurt their subscriber
counts, AFAIK. Granted, once you use a DVR you get hooked and don't want to
do without, but I don't think that was the deciding factor. Marketing,
install and billing issues probably contributed more.

Enjoy the commercial skipping feature while you can, I don't think we'll
have that available in hardware 1-2 years down the road. The advertisers are
none too pleased with that feature. They put heat on the broadcasters, who
pass it on to the content delivery companies and eventually that trickles to
the hardware design folks. Comcast execs have been asked about this very
issue and they take a "no comment" stance for now. It's clear the pressure
is there to remove the capability.

[VOOM] Re: There is plenty of HD content without Voom!

I've had DVR since 1999 and they said the same thing then. 6 years
later and they're still saying the same thing. The only thing that's
been conceded to is DVR's back then had a 30 sec skip button where
you could literally push the button 6 - 8 times in a couple seconds
and you'd completely skipped over every commercial and are back to
the show. _that_ was heaven. Microsoft of all companies had the best
DVR back then. They had dual tuner's with PIP before Tivo had dual
tuners. That was before anyone knew what "HD" was. I loved mine
right up to the moment it was fried by lightning.

RE: [VOOM] Re: There is plenty of HD content without Voom!

DVRs didn't have nearly the reach in '99 that they do today. Once the
advertisers start feeling like those commercial skips are really hampering
their "get the message out", you'll see stepped up pressure to remove such
features. If a company is spending a serious chunk of change to advertise on
a popular program, only to find out 10% of the audience skips right by them,
you can be sure they'll not be too happy and will make their objections
known.

[VOOM] Re: There is plenty of HD content without Voom!

You might be right about the DVR issue but the last figures I saw
several months ago showed less than 5% of sat/cable users had a DVR.
On sat/cable forums such as here on Yahoo and over on satguys you find
the enthusiasts which are nuts (myself included) who do not hue to the
demographic.

I know Robert has tried to convince me that we can't live without a
DVR. Would come in handy at 9PM Sun. evenings when Deadwood and
Desperate Housewives air at the same time. Not having a DVR was the
reason he left VOOM and was the reason he was going to return when
VOOM had one. However, DVR users are still the exception rather than
the rule.

Still enjoying HDTV w/o a DVR under rainy Seattle skies, Gill

Re: [VOOM] Re: There is plenty of HD content without Voom!

I am content to record what I need to a DVD using S Video until a reasonably
priced HD recording sytem becomes available. I have a hope for Firewire
interface for my RCA Hard drive IEEE1394 compatible recorder.

Re: [VOOM] Re: There is plenty of HD content without Voom!

I agree with you, Gill. A COX HD DVR and their half dozen HD channels with poor PQ will never be superior to what VOOM had without the DVR.
When I need to record something, I get 400 lines with my JVC VCR S-VHS with digital enhancements.
I read with amusement on my local HD chat group the challenges COX HD DVR subscribers have with their units.
Like most cable companies, COX will have to be pulled into the HD market.
One factor is the 1 gig limit. Lots of homes have RG-59, lower frequency splitters and amps, and adding channels runs into higher frequency problems. So cable companies will try compression, reallocation of frequencies, removing SD channels to accomodate HD - anything to avoid going higher than 800 mhz or so. That will cost them big money.
So don't look to cable for lots of HD soon.
I'm looking for an alternative to VOOM but it's not easy. And satellite still looks better- and has greater potential than cable.

Re: Re: [VOOM] Re: There is plenty of HD content without Voom!

True if your wallet can handle $76 a month which is what Dish network wanted per month. That did not include the $250.00 up front uprgarde for their HD DVR. For now I will step down to COX HD line up and DVR until a better more affordable soulution is available.
