I used to be up on the latest and greatest but not anymore due to parenthood. So here goes:

Current dish equipment -
510 DVR and a VIP 211
Customer for 8.5 years
No current commitments
Both pieces leased
56" DLP
Newly acquired 47" LCD that the DVR is hooked up to.

I want to have an HD DVR on the 47" and quite honestly the 211 works for what I need on the 56" and no real need for a DVR there but if the deal was right I'd do it.

Buy, continue to lease, any long time customer unadvertised deals? I'm sure there are some of you that have it all figured out like I used to. What upgrade(s) do I do? Help a clueless Dad out.

Thanks, MM

Depends on what they charge you. Usually leasing is much cheaper than buying. If there's nothing up front then the $5/mo. leased equipment fee is cheaper than cost of even a good used 612/622/722 DVR bought here or E-bay. Plus Dish charges that annoying additional receiver fee, so what are you saving?

Call in and play the "cancel game"... You'll get transferred to an account specialist.

This is what I was able to I was able to negotiate :

- free upgrade to VIP722 from a 625
- free install
- HD Essentials free for 12 months

My base programming package is the DVR Advantage plan (AT100 w/ DVR and locals).

I pay 40.97/mth for a year.

Your results may vary...

Good luck.

Call Dish and tell the CSR you have a tube of KY jelly handy. :D

LOL. That's sort of the point of all this. As an 8+ year customer, why would I need to call and play "games" with them? You would think that they would be doing backflips to keep me without the BS extensions, etc.

I remember 8 years ago everyone you spoke with was very up to speed. Now you're lucky if you get someone like that.

I'll bet you if I called D* they would be all over me like a cheap date.

I just upgraded my 211 to a 722 last week. It was $50 total for me including install. Also needed a two-year commitment. I've been happy with my service, except for losing Rave. Two year commitment wasn't that big a deal to me.

I didn't try to haggle at all. Perhaps I could have gotten more...

As an 11 year customer & HD/AEP subscriber, I called to cancel yesterday, and their only counteroffer was $10/mon off for a year. This was after the CSR put me on hold and transferred me to Customer Retention. I didn't attempt to negotiate, as I was calling after I already had D* installed on Saturday - but they didn't know that. I was underwhelmed.

All good. I called the "level 2" phone number someone had posted. DISH answered the phone "thanks for waiting" so you know you're there. Upgraded my older 510 to a 612 which works just fine for my app. No charge there. Reduced my monthly bill $10. I commited to 24 months (been a customer for 9yrs and 2mos. - time flies - not going anywhere) so I will get a rebate of $39 on months 1, 10, and 20. Best part is that all I asked was for his help to: save $$$, upgrade the box. And installed tomorrow afternoon.
