Vip receivers

So you're saying there's a chance!

So now that everyone is educated on the old VIP receivers, anyone need my old equipment?

Impressive RTCDude btw.

VIP 722 & 612 ? And all the possible dish combos?
DPP dual 110/119, single used for 61.5,.
Have the old EA DPP triple lnb and dish too. Used for 6 months- trees.
Anyone willing to pay a bit for removal, packaging, etc, it all up?

Just trying to get a few bucks for all the work to remove and pack it all up. My estimate - 3 hours. W/o patching roof and whatnot.

A member here, interested in my equipmt, called Dish, and they reported, Dish said, "would not activate someone's old VIP receivers?"
They had the R & S #'s too.
What is up w/ that? ? ?
Clean, clear acct, fwiw.
Is that true? ? ?

Thanks

Thanks Bearsat, it’s been a long technological journey.

As far as used VIP receivers, and not to be a downer…

I doubt there is much of market for them. They are 15+ years old now and considered very obsolete. One of my motivations for getting rid of my VIP722’s was that the hard drives were getting a little sick and I didn’t want them to crash on me and lose everything I had on them (I had some old 501’s that did this many years ago). Any of theses old used receivers are now ticking time-bombs. Once the hard drive goes out “they’re dead Jim”; nothing is going to bring them back to life. The fact that these hard drives have spun and worked for these many years is amazing and scary.

Dish just doesn’t want to deal with the VIP’s any more. They make more money from the easier to install DPH systems, streaming (and the likely subscription kickbacks), and the much better PPV. And I’m sure they already have all of the remanufactured VIP receivers they will ever need for those occasional replacements. Installing VIP receivers now is just a maintenance cost that Charlie would rather avoid if al all possible.

And realize that these days Dish’s first answer about VIP receivers will always be “no”. Some of that can be overcome with perseverance and in-depth know-how (as you see in this thread). But as you also can see here, it’s not a Journey for the faint-of-heart. Plus it likely only works if Dish thinks you are going forward, not backwards.

My best advice is to junk/recycle them like Dish says, be thankful for the service they gave you, and move on. You could try EBay’ing them and let the buyer beware. But I wouldn’t want to try to convince someone to buy and old 286 PC with MSDOS either.

They can activate them if they were purchased. Sounds like they were leased. Despite dish not wanting them back once they are leased to a customer thet can never be activated on another account. So at that point it's just trash.

Thanks for the detailed response.

Fwiw, the trick for those old VIP's longevity was keeping them cool and dust free imo.
I agree. I took the top cover off my VIP722’s. They ran much cooler that way and stopped the roaring fan noise. It also made it much easier to be able to vacuum out any accumulated dust.

But having a long professional history with hard drives running constantly over years, it is an exercise in inevitable failure. You just don’t know when.

I have family in Rural Nebraska. A new Fiber line was installed last summer. The fiber runs about 100 Ft from the house. Called to see what it would take to get connected. Pretty simple. $15,000 is all it would take. Didn't even get to the monthly charges. All that cost is to me is an FU; we don't want to mess with you answer.
