VIP622 external HDD question

If I get an external HDD can I record directly to it or do I have to record to the 622 and then transfer to it?

Can I playback directly from the external HDD?

How long does it take to transfer say a 2 hour movie from the VIP 622 to the external HDD (2 hours???)

1. Record to internal drive, then transfer to external.
2. Playback from external drive
3. 2 hour movie in HD usually takes me 15 or 20 minutes.

Any idea if they will someday allow you to record directly to the external drive? Or is this just wishful thinking.
