[VOOM] Antenna / rotor questions

My install was last Saturday. It was very cold and luckily my
installer fought it out and got the dish and upgraded antenna
installed.

First of all, I was suprised by the upgraded antenna.
I was kind of expecting one of those big, multi spoke, multi
directional ones that antennaweb.org has as my recomendation.

What was installed was a Winegard SquareShooter antenna, which
really suprised me since that's quite unlike what I was thinking.
Since I'm kind of in the middle of the local stations, I can only
reach the ones to one side of me with this single direction antenna.

The questions I have are:

1) Is this the actual upgraded antenna and Voom does not supply a
multidirectional one?

2) I'm just figuring out what a rotor is, so could I use one of
those to point to the other direction?

3) Will the Voom box automatically change the rotor direction to
tune in the requested channel?

The main reason this concerns me is that I will never get FOX or PBS
with this antenna pointed the way it is. This is really a problem
since the Super Bowl in high def is what is used to sell a lot of
HDTV's in my area. I was also looking forward to the Daytona 500 in
high def. I think Voom REALLY needs to be able to provide some of
these big events across the satellite if OTA is unable to provide
them.

1. Voom will install a channelmaster 4228 directional antenna if you press hard enough. Many think it is the best directional one on the market. I dont know what you need or what the square shooter is. I would be careful with multi directional as they ae highly susceptable to multipathing.
2. yes
3. no, but my remote control channelmaster rotor is programmable and you can assign channel numbers to different directions. But it operates off of a seperate remote

The Square shooter is a fine antenna and a new technlogy. You need to do a
little research to know if it's the best for you. A rotor may or may not be
necessary depending on what your research fnds out.
The most rigorous approach is to look up each stations call letters, find
their site, and read the about them section that should explain where the
antenna tower is located, how much power they are currently using and what
is the rf chanel for the digital broadcast. It will most likely be
different than their regular channel number.
Here is a link that gets me to that info for my local stations.
http://www.tvradioworld.com/region1/ny/tv_information.asp?m=bin
just click on Americas when you get to the site and then your state and you
will get a lot of info to help you answer antenna location and power.
Also try antennaweb.org but be sure to click on the local maps to see a
visual of where the antennas are.
