Before calling Voom, do some research. Are you just not receiving ABC
or is it not mapped at all. If not mapped, you will have to request
it from Voom. If it is mapped, you need to figure out why you aren't
receiving it. Have you been to antennaweb.com (maybe .org, I don't
remember)? Plug in your address. Is the ABC tower the same place as
the rest of them? If not, you may have a directional problem with
your antenna as opposed to a problem with the antenna itself. You may
have to check with the station. Are they down? It's possible. Are
they broadcasting on super low power? If so, you might have to build
a house at the base of the tower with a 50' antenna in order to pick
it up.

If you are mapped for ABC, and receiving all of the other stations,
you've got a problem unique to your location. You need to sit down
and figure out what is causing the problem and the best solution. We
might be able to help, but we need much more info.

RE: [VOOM] Lost ABC

When you say "we", does that mean you work for voom? .. just curious ..

Well as I said in a previous post, I worked with the installer to get the
ota channels. He was on the roof moving the antennae and I was checking to
see what channels worked. It was quite comical but in all seriousness, I'm
sure he greatly appreciated the help. Anyway right before he used the wrench
to lock down the location, I got all locals.. every one of them. But before
that point in time, it was really the abc channel that gave us hell. I think
what happened is when he locked it down, he moved it just enough where it
went out again. It was extremely sensitive. I know I can get all ota's
because we did have all channels appear just before the lockdown. Also, yes,
the channels (13-1,13-2) are in the guide.

[VOOM] Re: Lost ABC

Robert,
It's possible that the elevation is a problem. It was for me. My
installer put the ant on a first story roof off the side of my
house. I couldn't get some OTA's. The isntaller swore up and down
that moving it up to the very top peak of the house would not fix
it. They came out 5 or 6 times just trying to adjust it all to no
avail. I have a bi-directional WInegard GS2000A ant. Half of the ant
was behind the house in relation to the tower locations. The other
side was pinted into a large tree.

I was finally able to convice them to move the ant up to the top
peak where there are no trees or other obstructions and now I get
everything perfeclty. No drop outs, no pixelization. Even in down
pour rains my locals stay solid. I am 12 miles from the towers.

Hope this helps.

Sorry - had to go shopping.

No, I have nothing to do with Voom, other than a customer. I know
only what I've discovered through trial and error working on my own
setup.

>From what you've just expressed, my guess is your ABC station is

broadcasting on extremely low power or has some other technical
issue. If all of your stations are within a couple degrees of each
other, and the same distance away, moving your antenna just slightly
shouldn't have that much of an effect. Is it UHF or VHF and how does
that compare to the stations you receive? What does your picture do
when you try to tune in that station? Does it bring up a box that
says, "no signal - try again later" or is it just a black screen?

I have a couple local stations that are very flakey. When they aren't
having technical issues, I receive them just fine. But, they
frequently can't get it right and then we all (Voom and non-Voom)
start complaining.

Send an email to the station engineer with your questions/problems.
See if you can find a group for your area on the Satellite Guys
forums (if you are unfamiliar, register with them, go to the Voom
group, and in the top section you will find a grouping for local
threads)and pose some questions about this particular station. Do the
same thing on AVS Forums (you'll find local groups under "HDTV local
and reception (or something like that). Have a little patience,
though, as all of the forums slow down on the weekend.

>From what you've described, I strongly doubt this is a Voom problem.

Maybe an antenna issue but I doubt that also.

Remember, I'm just a nobody taking a shot at your situation. Possibly
someone with a lot more technical knowledge than I will join in and
give you a hand.

I've missed ABC on my OTA since the beginning. I've missed a season and a half of Alias episodes. I've not given up on VOOM yet. I WOULD recommend you get that antenna moved to the highest point you can get with a clear path to your towers. Even relatively small tree branches can cause signal difficulty. Good luck and remember that this is not a VOOM problem particularly, it is an issue with your location relative to your local broadcast towers, any obstacles, altitude-related difficulties with your antenna's location, etc. Hopefully your installer remembered to install your pre-amplifier to your StealthAntenna or whatever you have when it was installed, because without it your range will be significantly shorter. With the pre-amp installed the Stealth antenna will get a minimum of a 35 mile and a maximum of a 60 mile range, depending on MANY factors. Of course, that depends on a clear line of sight between as highly mounted as possible antenna and the broadcast towers. If all your towers are between 270 and 272 degrees, then point your antenna at 271 and, IF your line of sight is not blocked and your antenna is mounted as highly as you can get it, you should have minimal trouble receiving those DIGITAL (not analog) stations as long as they aren't out of range. Weather-related phenomena can either increase your antenna's range or decrease it. In snow, I can get longer range with my OTA because the signal skips off the clouds and falling snow. In overcast conditions, my range drops slightly. I have several towers between 40 and 50 miles away that come in partially, solidly, or not at all, depending on conditions. Good luck to you as you study the situation further. That little stealth antenna with the pre-amp installed is not a bad antenna, it can do pretty well at times. The bi-directional Wineguard antenna mentioned above I've heard is also a very capable antenna. Looking into a rotor that would allow you to fine-tune your directional capabilities MIGHT help you out, especially if you have broadcast towers at odd angles to one another. If you haven't done so, check www.antennaweb.org for a list of OTA digital stations in your area. I concur with some others who have said to not be afraid to call or email your local station engineers. I've found many of them to be very helpful and willing to give advice on OTA reception.
