[VOOM] PVR by football season or else...

I will have to bite the bullet and buy the Tivo from Direct. I
thought I could patiently await Voom's PVR but I'm starting to rethink
my position. There are too many programs that I used to Tivo that I
forget to watch now. I was so used to looking ahead in the
programming schedule and recording things so I could watch at my
leisure. At first I balked at $999, but now I'm seeing it as
feasible. Am I the only one who feels this way?

YES! <grin>

My Dad misses his Tivo too.. but I'm confident the VOOM DVR will be out by
October (crossing fingers, toes & eyes!) so I'm going to wait it out.

It would be a lot easier to make a decision if VOOM would at least throw us a bone and give us an update on the DVR's progress. I'm not asking for a set release date, but it would be nice to know if its still coming this year or not.

There's no way a PVR will be out in the next 6 weeks from Voom. If I had a $1000 laying around, I would also switch. I'm waiting for someone (my cable co. or a dbs) to offer an affordable HD-DVR, but that seems like something that's 6 months away.

[VOOM] Re: PVR by football season or else...

Yes, I have the Direct HD Tivo. +++

Also, I am confident that Voom will have their STB (not DVR) stable,
scanning local channels and actually working by October (crossing
fingers,toes & eyes!)

[VOOM] Re: PVR by football season or else...

their stb is stable and scans for locals now. also it does work with
Tivo, just doesn't record in high-def, but the recordings look very
good.

I'm an optimist. I believe VOOM will release their DVR and it and the STB
will actually work.. by EOM October :)

I am keeping Voom for the Olympics(My cable has not signed a deal with NBC), and then it is a race between my cable company bringing in the Motorola DCT6412 and Voom.

The latest I saw (from a usually reliable source) is that the 6412's would be Novemebr at the earliest. It was in a local forum, so, I'm not sure whether it was just for the Philly area, or everywhere.

I have chosen to stick it out and wait. in the mean time i ordered a 80hr SD series TIVO. I hope they release it before X-mas would make a gret gift :D

MR.C

P.s. if i pay the monthly subscription with TiVo will i have a VOOM PG in my Tivo with locals??

David.

Your probably right but it still sounds like a close race with Voom.

[VOOM] Re: PVR by football season or else...

The only problem with this is my Tivo, was from Direct so I can't use
it with Voom. Obviously I'm not going to buy a standard Tivo as a
stop gap measure. When I first got Voom I was so impressed I canceled
all buy Sunday ticket on Direct. But now I realize about the only
channel I watch in HD besides the ones I get OTA is DiscoverHD. I
have not and probably never will watch more than a few minutes of the
Voom originals at a time. So if it comes down to $1000 and Tivo, or
Voom originals and no PVR. Then I'm pretty sure Voom is going to lose
out. I like Voom, but I love Tivo.

I'm keeping my Dish Network non-HD PVR for that reason. What I'm actually doing is ordering both basic Voom and the Dish Network HD pack with a leased 811 HD receiver. I figure I'll pay the month-by-month lease for both HD satellite services for the next few months and keep the existing Dish PVR I have now for recording all my SD shows. I can live without taping HD for a few months. Heck, I don't even have it yet, my new Sammy DLP is supposed to arrive next week.

By running Voom and Dish HD side-by-side for a few months I'll be in a better position to decide which of the 3 satellite systems I want to commit to permanently through the purchase of an expensive HD DVR system since purchasing one of those locks you into a single satellite service. I'm outside the range of cable so satellite is my only option.

Whether or not I keep Voom will probably depend on how much college football they have and whether or not they get the regional fox sports networks and ESPN college gameplan because I'm a fan of PAC-10 teams and I live in Texas for now. But ultimately which satellite service I finally settle on will most likely depend on what combination of HD DVR and HD programming looks the best in 6 months or so.

No. You can either record your OTA locals by time/channel as with a VCR (no
guide data), or run an analog antenna input into the TiVO in which case you
WILL get the local guide info. You could also subscribe to your most basic
cable service, and run the cable into the TiVO's cable/antenna input.

With either of the last two options, TiVO will integrate the analog and
satellite inputs into one guide, and automatically switch inputs for you.

[VOOM] Re: PVR by football season or else...

Ken, perhaps your STB is stable. My receiver still stutters (known
problem), locks up (known problem) abd does not scan for locals
(known problem). I can not watch a whole movie (say 1.5 hours) on
Voom without a few video dropouts lasting a few seconds or picture
freeze lasting 5 - 10 seconds. There could be a few of you that are
not having or do not notice any of this, good for you. For us
others, I reserve the right to mention it or complain about it. I do
not have these problems with my DirecTv HD. When I got Voom, my plan
was to cancel DirecTv, now I think it will be the other way around.

Snappingfish, I'm sorry to hear you're having those issues. I'd be upset too
if I had them. As a voom user, nothing more, I hope you stick it out a while
longer while voom works out their issues in the firmware. If you haven't had
the chance to speak with Wilt, you should do so. He is very receptive and
helpful to those willing to accept help. I'm hopeful that it's a matter of
weeks before voom really turns things around.

[VOOM] Re: PVR by football season or else...

Robert,
I have had VOOM since last November and since I replaced all of my
receivers, received the 8200 power amplified antenna and got the 30"
dish, I would never have said that VOOM is rock solid. But I was
persistent in getting these upgrades because I purchased 5
receivers, four for my house and one for mt motorhome. I can now say
that I can watch an entire movie with no drop-outs and my wife is
not frustrated anymore about constanbtly rebooting. I don't know if
you arfe renting or purchased, but I would pursue the set up I have
now. I even receive Tuscon channels all the way from Scottsdale
which is about 150 miles north of Tuscon.

I feel for everyone who is still having issues, but you can get them
resolved if you have the time and patience to get it done.

[VOOM] Re: PVR by football season or else...

Snappfish,
My plan was to drop Direct as well. If things did not get better I
was about to throw VOOM out and sue them for the cost of the
equipment. I was having the exact problems you have mentioned. Now I
have direct for programming only, i.e. NFL ticket, RSN, SCI-FI's,
Children's programming, all the Discovery channels, History
International, National Geographic and the Science Channel. My plan
to have VOOM as my sole provider is not possible, not because of
hardware issues anymore, but because of programming.

I want to get a Direct HD receiver for the NFL ticket, which one did
you get?

Thanks,
Ken
