OK, SD will be broadcast digitally, but the analog broadcasting will be discontinued.
So all broadcasts will be digital, most will move down to VHF, and SD may still be sent digitally but what source material will be SD?
True, stations could use their digital bandwidth to send 3 or 4 SD channels instead of a 1080i or 720p signal, but as HDTVs proliferate, more and more TV watchers are not going to watch blurry SD, just like I can't stand the look of SD now. So more and more consumers will switch off those SD channels and find an HD channel to watch.
So the pressure is on for more and more channels to switch to HD broadcasting.
By the way, there is an excellent article on "Home Theater Builder Magazine" (Nov issue) on all the cable channels and satellite companies "plans" for 2005. These are written by the execs in each company.
Direct TV will only have 4 HD channels except for network feeds from CBS and Fox and some proprietary stuff like Sports specials.
Voom: "In fourth Quarter 2004, VOOM will introduce an HD DVR that can record and playback HD video programming in its intended format".
In 2005, VOOM will begin the roolout of its VOOM HD Nome Media Network, the ultimate accessory for nome entertainment buffs. This whole house solution combines the HDTV capable DVR with the VOOM HD Home Media Network's networking capabilities, allowing customers to link televisions, computers, and other entertainment devices so that programming, music and photos can be enjoyed throughout the house".
"VOOM is also prepared to convert to MPEG--4 compression technology in 2005, which will double it's available satellite capacity. Unlike other providers, VOOM was built with HD in mind and is prepared to convert to MPEG-4 without equipment legacy issues".
Let's chew on this for a while!
