What do you prefer? Dish’s AutoHop or TiVo’s Automatic SkipMode?

I prefer TiVo’s Automatic SkipMode. You can record on a larger selection of channels, a larger timeframe for the allowed recorded shows that automatically skip commercials, plus a wider selection of TV shows. Though I’m not a sports fan myself, I know that SkipMode also can skip through the NFL Draft announcements going right to the announcements plus it can also skip the Super Bowl and go right to the commercials in GameSkip. So while the last two examples I mentioned don’t really matter to me, all of which are reasons I think TiVo has the advantage here. The only advantage I can see with Dish’s AutoHop is that you can set it to up to all four of the Big Four at once up to every day of the week if you want using only one tuner. Feel free to disagree here. Thoughts?

Speaking of which, when Tivo won that ludicrous suit against Dish, wasn't the remedy that Dish would license Tivo's technology? Has Dish ever implemented any of that tech they were forced to buy?

Yeah Dish could have had an even better DVR incorporating TIVO technology like Directv did.

Problem with Directv is they kept the TiVo to the same crappy platform and didn’t offer it in a genie version.

Is the THR22 really that bad? It gets a lot of complaints here but on Amazon reviews and on the TiVo Community website many seem to like it!

That was a defined set of patents. Skip Mode came out after the settlement IIRC, so it may not be included. Also, I believe some of Dish's patents were included in the settlement, so they may have use tech from AutoHop to implement Skip Mode. Unless you know someone who worked on the products, we will likely never know.

Dish uses autohop as a negotiating tool for retransmission consent. Tivo doesn't have to deal with that. The new autoskip on Tivo Experience 4 is pretty awesome.
It sure is! It works flawlessly and on many more channels and shows than what Dish's did. And since Tivo doesn't actually deal with the channel providers it should stick around as is for a very long time.

I sure liked Direct's DVR that had Tivo in it years ago. I got to operate one when I visited a relative in Florida in the early 2000s. Wouldn't that be super if Tivo and the Hopper 3 combined! :shh

And here’s another difference. Unlike Dish’s auto hop which has varying length of time before you can use it, TiVo’s is ready within moments after the episode has finished.

I am definitely a novice when it comes to all these gadgets but if tivo doesn’t work with DISH, what difference does it make? Can tivo be hooked up where it records all my channels, not just OTA?

If you have cable. It works awesome with Cox and OTA for me. The original Tivo Skipmode (and the internet bundle discount) is what got me to leave Dish 3 yrs ago after being a customer for over 15years.

That only works if you have a really old TiVo, like a series 1 or 2. Maybe a series 3.

The later series 4-6, (Premiere, Roamio and Bolts) don’t support recording via analog audio and video inputs. They only support recording via cable QAM or OTA.

Skipmode is only available on certain models of Premieres and the newer Roamio and Bolts. Auto skip is only available on Roamio and Bolts running the newest software called TiVo Experience 4 aka Codename Hydra/Mira.

TiVo discontinued service for their Series 1 DVRs a few years ago.
