What is the ERD setting for on 211/411?

I was searching through the menus (Menu / system setup / installation / VCR setup) and there was a place labeled "ERD Setup". You have to go in to that section and enable it. Once you enable it, when you set up a timer it gives you the option of VCR, Auto, Reminder, Or ERD. I know ERD stands for external recording device but what is considered a external recording device? It shouldn't mean a vcr because there is a option for that. Is this a setting for the pocket dish? It would be nice if dish allowed us to add a external hard drive!!!

I guess I've been hiding under a rock here lately. I did a search and found a few topics on "ERD" but didn't really get a clear picture on what it was going to be used for.

I think that will be used for an external usb hard drive.
