As I understand it, the recent bill that the president just signed basically retains a lot of the Senate's original McCain - Ensign version that Dish (along with the DTC and CEA) was pushing for.

Dish has gone on record more than once that if they were allowed to import digital distant networks to areas that couldn't receive them that they (Dish Network) "could provide the HD versions of those networks IMMEDIATELY" . Charlie said this at one of his appearances to Congress last summer.
The "I want my HDTV" web site http://www.iwantmyhdtv.com/iwanthdt....jsp?PID=5080-8 still has this posted:

"If Congress allows DBS providers to offer a digital signal, network HDTV can be available to all consumers immediately. ?

The DTC (Digital Transition Coalition) site http://www.digitaltransitioncoalition.org/digital/ still has this posted as part of a letter they sent to Congress 4/27/04 and which CHARLIE signed !:

".....This proposal would make digital signals available to families across the country immediately, not ten or twenty years from now......"

Dish has been very clear about this.

I have personally corresponded with (and have the emails from) a senior Dish official in their Government Relations office in Washington who said that if this bill got passed that Dish would provide the HD versions of the 4 national nets shortly after it was signed into law.

This person provided me with a lot of info that I posted during some of the House & Senate debates last Summer. He asked me to not mention his name though, saying that neither he nor Dish could be linked to this directly. Now he won't even answer my emails.

In my opinion it appears that Dish has once again lied (remember Charlie stating back in the 90s that Dish would never provide any porn channels).

Lied not only to us customers but to Congress, the FCC and the general public.

I'm not sure what can be done about it but it may make for sinterestingting reading in some of the HDTV media publications.

Whoa whoa. Hold your horses, tex. :)

I think it's more than reasonable to allow this to slip a bit, especially as congress not only dropped HD distants in the laps of the dbs guys, but also Sig viewed. The FCC has 60 days to draft their list of Sig. viewed channels. I would at least grant this as a freebie period for the dbs folks, given that the impact isn't mutually exclusive.

Also - I think "immediately" is in reference to the DTV transition, which is on the scale of YEARS late, and getting worse.

not to mention - you would only be talking about CBS going distant in HD now - just because they *legally* could send out the network distants doesn't mean that the broadcasters will beat down their door and hand it to them for free :)

Absolutely. Plus the number of eligible subscribers must be fairly low so I can see why there would be no rush to provide them given the current lack of bandwidth.

Being one of the qualified (white area) subscribers I would love to have the other network HD channels, but for now I'll be patient and see what E* and D* do.

Have you gotten a confirmed date on FOX-HD? I didn't see anything over at AVS Forums other than the continual "coming soon, maybe" speculation that also applies to D* and TNT-HD. I may well switch to D* if their HD plans come to fruition and E* doesn't answer, but I'm in wait and see mode until summer.

there may be room at the wing slots, but charlie lost that battle i thought, it all has to go on ONE dish very soon. that is why the two spaceway birds are getting boosted to the 101 slot at directv. just think each can carry 500 channels of hd and spot beam all at once. maybe thats why the speculation on wall street is echostar is for sale
must be a bummer to have rupert and his deep pockets for a competitor

One Dish rule in 18 months. As long as everything goes as planned with E* 10 it won't be that big a deal.

Right now the Spaceway satellites are just pie in the sky. When and only when D* grandiose plans become reality will they have any value to the HD consumer. For now it's just a lot of vapor. I don't expect them to be operational until Fall 2005 at the earliest.

The majority of speculation on Wall Street involving E* concerns a buyout of Voom. It has been mentioned that E* might merge with one of the big media companies, Disney mostly, but there is nothing beyond that.

I'm in agreement with the Voom part, but Disney and all the E* porn channels...hmmm.

I doubt the porn would cause them much concern. Now having to get along with Charlie on the other hand.......:shocked ;) :D

I'm sorry I have no irrational attachment or raving dislike of any content provider or the personnel associated with them. Since you only seem intent on making uninformed statements and name calling I'll politely leave you to your childish rant.

...not to mention factually incorrect. AMC-15 is a recent launch, and moving into place now. AMC-16 goes up tomorrow.

What do ya mean "Tex", I spent the first 22 yrs of my life 5 miles from UConn, in Willington, Ct and been in Vermont ever since :) (although there was that year in Dallas when I was 2).

Anyway, I don't mind giving a little time for the smoke to clear but per the Dish press release right after the bill passed I got the impression they were giving up on HD for a few years. That's a complete 180 from their promise to put up the HD distants "immediatly". Unless I'm missing something in the final text of the bill as signed, there's nothing preventing Dish from doing what they said they could and would do if the bill was passed.
