Why so many dishes?

I am interested in why people get so many dishes. I see many getting up to five. Are all these used through DirecTv or Dish? How can they all be used? I am thinking you are spending hundreds of dollars a month on subscriptions.

I don't know about others, but I think a nice setup would be as described here, which shows a way to get all the FTA channels on 8 satellites at a time (thus needing up to 8 dishes).

I'm sure many of those people you see are just subscribed to the channels that are on those extra satellites of their provider, or have multiple providers. Then there's also satellite Internet access.

I have 3: 110/119, 148, Direcway. Just picked up an old P* dish to play with, so that's 4, and if I had VOOM, SkyAngel, or D* (for NFL) that would be 5.
