Dish and ESPN

Well, I will say I'm not a sports fan. I realize I'm in the minority here. However, I should not have to subsidize someone who is a sports fan so they can have the channel in the regular line up driving up the cost for everyone. I shouldn't also have to help pay for the over-the-top salaries of sports players. Its out of control and a damned joke. Nobody should be making millions on playing a game...nobody.

BTW as I am digging around for info on this I am hearing (unofficially of course) that ESPN is not even up for renewal this year on DISH Network... this appears to be just bad reporting from the Post.
Maybe dish just wants to move it to the sports package so they can raise the average viewers cost and still keep the two year price freeze on the main package?

And I shouldn't have to subsidize the people who watch MSNBC, FSTV, Nick, Lifetime, E, Cartoon Net, MTV, SyFy, VH1, ect... so they can keep those channels (that I never watch) in the regular line-up. It cuts both ways.

Without A-La-Cart, that's just how it is. But don't fret too much. You may be subsidizing some sports fans. But I guarantee that those same sports fans are subsidizing you right back.

Cheers

Compared to the ESPN of 20 years ago, today's ESPN (1-Ocho) approach a waste of bandwidth. It's kinda like MTV, 20 years ago they were music videos and today I doubt one can even find a music video on the channel.

I used to watch ESPN because they covered sports that local stations and newspapers failed to report: the smaller schools, auto racing, boat racing etc. Now it is endless hours of talking about the big, mainstream sports and teams. It has reached the point I even go to other .com sites for sports results.

If Dish were to part ways with ESPN, I say good riddence. I don't want to hear Monday Night Football talk about everything except what is going on the field.

If DISH dropped ESPN, I wonder how many people would move to DISH from other Providers.

To save $4.69? I don't think most people would decide that about $5 is worth switching providers over. I'm sure a few would come but I think they would lose much more than they would gain. That $5 is only if Dish decided to give 100% of what they would no longer be paying back to their customers with a reduced rate. I don't see them doing that either.

Remember that $4.69 is just for one ESPN station not all of them. There would be more of a savings.

If Dish dropped the ESPN family of networks, the savings would not get passed along to Dish subs. Many channels have been removed over the years without any rate decreases.

loss of monday night football alone would cause many people to switch

Yeah wait till the weekly neilson ratings come out for next week. People have been saying a lot of customers wouldn't notice ESPN being removed but their MNF ratings will be the highest rated cable shows every week of the season. No matter what anyone says ESPN is right up there with any other cable channel in viewership. If that many people are watching it a good portion of them would not stay with a provider that doesn't carry it.

According to Craig Moffet that if DISH drops ESPN subs could save almost $10 a month.

I think if they dropped ESPN DISH would have to lower peoples bills to indeed show them why they did what they did.
