Fees increasing?

Satellite tv is still cheaper for programming than cable, but equipment fees and Dvr fees is where they pump up the price you pay. IF it is just you or your wife and one receiver , you will come out cheaper than cable. IF you have more than three people the equipment fees start stacking up. Tivo is just like DISH . They charge over $500.00 for their latest Premeire receivers and around $14.00 for their recording fee or dvr fee. DISH has decided to pump up their fees for Hoppers to $14.00 as well. Directv is higher than DISH on programming and they have fees that are higher ,by I think it was a dollar more for the same whole house dvr, than DISH does. The DISH Vip class of dvrs is worse for equipment fees, than the hopper. You pay around $17.00 for an additional Vip dvr like the 722/722k on your account.

Dead on correct. The plus is those who least can afford to pay much, can get a decent package and an excellent DVR receiver with Dish (or Direct) for generally much less than Cable. As you want more equipment the difference in price to Cable (And Direct TV) narrows.

So if a hopper costs $300

If a Hopper costs $300 to make, then someone is losing their butt on it. I see them selling all over the place for $200 or less. At $100 down and $14 per month, Dish is making money at the eight month mark. Even at $7 per month, Dish is making money on a Hopper on month 15. So for the original H/J customers (who sometimes paid $200 upfront), that $14 per month is close to pure profit.

I called directv and the guy said a genie and client or genie and dvr would run me 31 a month plus the package I pick. Difference is their low end package compared to dish's has bravo, style that my wife watches. In order to get that with dish I have to go to the top 200. What really bugs me about dish is when the ball game is on in hd, right after the game they do tigers live and
Dish cuts the feed out and in order to watch it I have to switch over to sd which is horrible to watch. I'm not sure what I'm going to do when my contracts up.

The reality is,even if Dish releases a 4 or 6 tuner hopper, they will still charge higher fees. They'll make it to where there is no gain in having one hopper or two.

Agree with this.

I think at some point dish will release a 5 or 6 tuner hopper but I bet they will make you have a Joey if you have a 2nd tv. If joey's had a tuner in it then it would be beneficial to get one. When I asked the csr about the fees increasing, he had no idea what I was talking about. You see ads where dish is bashing directv over fishing for customers but now when the fees do go up next month then dish can no longer justify that. If anything don't you think dish would lower the dvr fees down to encourage people to stay?

If they lowered the fees of the hopper, got rid of the whole home dvr fee and gave you the new customer deal for 20 months then less people would be switching. Otherwise like others said, satellite will eventually die off due to people sick of the rising costs of the fees.

I talked it over with my wife and we like Dish and don't want to leave. So I'm going to drop the PP which will make up for the doubling of the 2nd Hopper fee. When our new customer promo is over we're dropping from AEP to Top 200 or maybe even top 120. The BB@Home seems like a joke now with Universal channel and Fox Movie showing commercials and cutting their films for time and content. So there is another $10 savings for that.

So after reading through most of this thread... what Dish has done is make all of us questions some of the extra's we have. So by them raising fees like this they will actually be losing money from most of us. I think the people that don't visit these types of forums will do the same thing when they get their bill and see it went up just a few months after the first price hike. My wife and I usually suspend service in June and July because we don't watch that much TV then. So that will usually save us around $200 a year. We can't do that this year because of the new customer promos but we will next year.

So thanks Dish for making us realize we don't need a lot of the extra's and you will not be getting extra money from our family. At least until the next two price hikes next year. We all know that's coming!

Which is fine by us. Like I said we don't want to leave Dish. So yea it extends it and that's OK. We still save $200 a year.

2H/0J is just a $4 increase over 2 722s. I'd say that it's still a better value than 2 722s.

Am I miscalculating something (BTW $4 plus the $7 Hopper increase)? I see the below (currently have 2 ViP722s):

Estimated DISH bill after May 2013 and comparison to Hopper alternatives

Yes, I know you can break up the DVR & Whole Home fees in other ways, or even just call it a 1st Hopper fee. I just find it easier to look at it this way.

It looks to me like I can still get 2H and pay to own 2 Joeys by paying more upfront, and having Dish install and troubleshoot it all, and basically pay a buck more than I'm paying today with two ViP722s when I leave the Joeys disabled. Actually, I'm grandfathered w/o locals so I'm currently paying $5 less, but I put full freight up there to be on a level playing field.

Correct? Have I missed something?

Navychop the etf on upgrades is prorated @ $10 per month with a maximum of $240.

If the dvr fee goes up on vip's I'll send back my 722 & buy a 211. I can buy 211's all day long for $49 + shipping.

Math looks good to me navy.We save by having 1 722 and one 612,saves an extra $7 per month, still have 2 dual tuner receivers.

Yup,we upgraded an old 501 to a 211 last year,with an ehd,makes a nice dvr.

The only thing concerning with Navy's math is the $10 dvr fee for vip's. Maybe I missed something here...

Btw, you can save $7 a month which is basically otherwise wasted by removing the protection plan, and just add it for four months whenever you need service done.

That is great advice, however for me personally pp is a total waste of money since I am the service man. :D
