optimizing satellite pointing without using a receiver...

Not a low opinion, but I prefer 360 radial compression fittings and think they do a better job than snap n seals. The SnS are definitely better then hex crimps. Eddie

    about ground loops...

That's what I said, just trying to pinpoint the original posters confusion. :) Eddie

    about ground loops...

and I THINK the shield of the coax connects to the case (chasis), so in this example it may appear as if a double ground/loop problem would occur, which is what I think the original poster was asking about. Thanks for pointing out about the 3rd prong, I haven't seen any of the current...

    about ground loops...

A simplified answer is: You are not really grounding the satellite, but bonding it to your electrical ground. So they are at the same potential. Most satellite receivers did not have 3-prongs, I do not know if that has changed recently, but even if they did, it is at the same potential...

Very seriously about becoming a retailer...

Whatever you do, make sure you have a VIABLE business plan and stick to it. I don't believe you can have a successful business plan by selling Dish/Direct as your only business, at least not starting now. Do you have a local small business association where you live? They can give great...

Lightening Rod, good idea or bad?

http://www.lightningsafety.com/nlsi_lhm/InstallRods.html "NLSI suggests that detailed attention to bonding, grounding, and surge protection ranks higher in priority than the LPS." You've have to fix your electrical problem. I know it is expensive and inconvenient, but it's got to be done...

    WARNING: Why DirecTV stinks...

Is Directech the Directv dealer that sold you the system? Directv has gone to great legal lengths to distance themselves from their authorized dealers (just as Dish Network has done). They don't want the responsibility of the physical installation. Even now that they do "in-house"...

    Surround Sound from OTA

From the TV optical output, through the optical cable, in through the optical input on your surround receiver. Don't worry, you are overthinking this! :) Eddie

multiswitch serves only one receiver at a time

Run another cable from the dish to the new receiver. Disconnect the mutiswitch. If you go up there, you might as well run all 4 lines from the dish for future use. Eddie

    Surround Sound from OTA

Leave everything as it is and ADD the optical cable. It only carries audio. Eddie

    Surround Sound from OTA

I can't see your pdf link right now. If your JVC has an optical input, hook up an optic cable between your TV optical out to your JVC optical in. 1 wire and you are done with the connection. Eddie

    Surround Sound from OTA

From the link you provided, the only way to hook-up an external sound processor is through the optical Dolby Digital output. Eddie

Proposal for how to ground dish and cables...

Run 2 separate ground wires, one from the mast and one from the coax to the bonding point. Joining them at the ground block is out of compliance with NEC as it is considered a splice. That's only your 1st question, try this great site for more info...

    Need TV Recommendations

HD sets vary widely on how well they display SD. I would suggest to go to a specialty store that has the tvs he is interested in hooked up and watch SD content and see which one he approves of. Personally, I do not like the way any HD set displays SD and have stopped watching all SD programs...

    UHF Remote Problem

Like Sam said, be careful you don't change both. To be absolutely sure, I would unplug the plug from the electrical outlet on the 322 while changing the address on the 811. Eddie

Should I buy the more expensive dish???

I say get the cheapest. I do not know the exact specs currently used, but they used to be branded by different companies even though they were made by the same manufacturer. Maybe someone here can confirm or deny if this is still the case. Eddie

tale of woe - help needed

If the receiver was only connected to the dish, the surge had to come through the coax. The coax is most likely toast, even if you can't see any external damage. Eddie

    Electrical shock from Receiver box???

While uboatcmdr was probably correct about fixing the problem temporarily by disconnecting the groung so you can watch tv, DO NOT DO IT!!!! If your house is now grounding through the satellite ground, it could arc when you disconnect it with lethal results!!! DO NOT DISCONNECT ANYTHING. DO...

about self install and service activation with D*

Like hdtvtechno said you order channels after it is installed. You order the channel packages you want and they are available to all the receivers on your account. Obviously, the HD channels will only show up on HD receivers. You do not need to spell it out for them, it sorts itself out...

Removing the Diamond Shield on HD Mits.

I had the Mitsu 65819 and when I removed the shield I wrapped it in its original protective cover which worked great. If they don't come with the sets anymore, it was thin soft cushioning foam, just like Home Depot or Lowes sells as moving packaging. A big roll should be around $20. Tape it...
