After reading Vurbano's stab at the PS3 (desperate as it was) I began to wonder how many PS3 owner's really like their PS3 and how they use it. I purchased mine based on experiance with Sony and that in the gaming market they have always delivered on most promises. In addition, as everyone knows, I have always been a BD supporter and the PS3 has proved to be the best BD player to purchase with the initial release of BD. With the release of the PS3 Sony made many promises and most have come true. So, lets find out from the current and previous PS3 owners how they used their PS3 and if they were satisfied.

I didn't vote on improvement of the product since they've permanently removed features since launch and we're still waiting on Home.

It's primarily used for DVD movies by the wife and the occasional blue chip BD releases (I'm looking at you, Iron Man).

As far as this generation of consoles, it's failed among my circle of friends. The winner for anyone is the console that more/most/all of your friends have given the emphasis on online play. Without enough to get more of my friends to pick it up, it ensures that all multi-platform titles will be purchased for the 360, and the exclusives (which Sony is starting to downplay... likely because fewer are coming/exhausting AAA titles) are niche (MGS, LBP) or uninteresting/easilly trounced by rival 360 exclusives/multiplat titles (ie GT vs GRID).

It will be relatively successful, and it's ability to catch up to the 360 will be important only in a marketing and fanboy fodder aspect, but I don't see it turning a corner at this point and getting more of my friends to pick it up outside of it dropping to the PS2 pricepoint.

The only feature that I know that was removed was the backwards compatibility for PS2 games. Since the XBOX360 really doesn't do backwards compatiblity either I see that as a non-issue. As for the success of the XBOX360 and its onlinegaming -- for now I will concede that to the 360 but only here in the US. Outside of the US the 360 is not doing very well at all and is becoming a distant third in most countries between the 3 consoles currently out.

All three consoles should become successful this time around but the Wii is definately the money earner here. Cheaper to purchase, cheaper to buy games for and cheaper to develope for. Only reason Sony is starting to make money is that they have kept the price up while reducing production costs. The 360 has made some money on some great titles but the system itself still has a too high failure rate for M$ to be making any money on the system. M$ is really making all their money on charges for that online experiance you like. If Home really does work the way Sony intends for it to (and they have not delivered yet) then watch for M$ to drop prices on the base unit to PS2 prices to keep selling them.

Its not my stab Joe. It is what the indiustry observes. AS BD players get cheaper the fact that the PS3 is getting whipped as a game machine becomes more and more glaring. One has to wonder how long SOny will continue to produce it. AS for me I am happy with my PS3.

The only feature that I know that was removed was the backwards compatibility for PS2 games.

Right. They made their video game console play fewer video games. Also removed the card reader, and support for some audio format. But I forgot, audio formats are only important when they benefit your argument in the BD forums, not hurt it. The unit also lost half of it's USB ports, which come in handy for people that need to use one for an IR spot for their universal remotes since Bluetooth was wedged in as a convenient way to force people to buy all the new accessories.... and then buy them again when they were legally allowed to build controllers with rumble again.

Since the XBOX360 really doesn't do backwards compatiblity either I see that as a non-issue.

What? This just shows you don't know much about the product you're bashing. Just wow. I'll give you a list of all the Xbox 1 games it will play... since it can't play any of them surely it won't be long. I will be nice and spoiler it for you, kind of like a surprise. If only there was a place (google) that one could look for (xbox.com) such a list.

1This list of titles that have passed hand certification for compatibility with Xbox 360 is provided for informational purposes only and is subject to change without notice. To ensure the highest quality gaming experience, in the event that an unforeseen technical issue is discovered after hand certification is completed, Microsoft® reserves the right to remove any game name from this list. Please check back often to see the most current list of games.

2Currently the North American versions of these games are the only ones supported as backward compatible titles on Xbox 360.

3The December 2005 update includes the Monk Zeng content from the limited edition of Jade Empire.

4Offline version only; versions included with Xbox LIVE® Starter Kits or as a bundled game with other Xbox Live titles do not yet play on Xbox 360.

5Currently the Japanese version of this game is not supported as a backwards compatible title on the Xbox 360.

As for the success of the XBOX360 and its onlinegaming -- for now I will concede that to the 360 but only here in the US. Outside of the US the 360 is not doing very well at all and is becoming a distant third in most countries between the 3 consoles currently out.

So what are you starting this thread for, how people like their PS3, or how the companies are doing internationally? I am sure in some countries Pepsi is beating Coke, so we should surely drink that more here then?

All three consoles should become successful this time around but the Wii is definately the money earner here. Cheaper to purchase, cheaper to buy games for and cheaper to develope for.

You also forgot that they make money on each one sold. Yes, the fad that is the Wii has redefined mainstream gaming and Home and 360 Avatars show the HD consoles adapting to take advantage of a large group of new gamers it has brought into the market. It doesn't have the 3rd party software success you see on the HD consoles however, and has more shovleware out for it than the first Playstation, which is no easy feat.

Only reason Sony is starting to make money is that they have kept the price up while reducing production costs.

Ya, good for them, bad for us. It's still debatable they're making money on the console, the PS2 and PSP are what are bringing the gaming unit profitability. Just saying their gaming unit is making money while the PSP and PS2 still sell a ton every month doesn't mean the PS3 is making them money.

The 360 has made some money on some great titles but the system itself still has a too high failure rate for M$ to be making any money on the system.

Really, put up or shut up here. So sick of hearing about this. Prove it. This is like saying you shouldn't buy a PS2 because you'll get disc read errors, or don't buy a Ford or use Firestone tiers because the tires will shred and you'll die. All things that still happen legitamitely outside of the serial failures that we are all familiar with but are not indicative problems of the past.

Do you really think that if the MS problems still existed (once believed to be as much at 70% of launch units) that they would not have been sued? There would be no defense to be made if the several million units have failed at this point.

M$ is really making all their money on charges for that online experiance you like. If Home really does work the way Sony intends for it to (and they have not delivered yet) then watch for M$ to drop prices on the base unit to PS2 prices to keep selling them.

So when MS drops prices, it's an act of desperation, what is it when Sony drops prices? I guess you don't realize that Sony has dropped their prices (in addition to introducing new SKUs) many more times than MS has at this point.

Microsoft is making money off of their success, not from things like $60 controllers Sony is offering. Complaining about the cost of Xbox Live reminds me of a saying I seen thrown around the BD forum... what is it now... 'You spend $1500 on a TV and complain about a $30 movie?'

Clearly if people weren't getting their money's worth, they'd unsubscribe. It's clear that with the 360, people are getting exactly what they want, because I've never seen a thread like this for their console in the nearly 3 years it's been out... while they don't seem uncommon for the PS3, going on 2 years itself, and still looking for a real identity for many.

So what are you starting this thread for, how people like their PS3, or how the companies are doing internationally? I am sure in some countries Pepsi is beating Coke, so we should surely drink that more here then?

You also forgot that they make money on each one sold. Yes, the fad that is the Wii has redefined mainstream gaming and Home and 360 Avatars show the HD consoles adapting to take advantage of a large group of new gamers it has brought into the market. It doesn't have the 3rd party software success you see on the HD consoles however, and has more shovleware out for it than the first Playstation, which is no easy feat.

Ya, good for them, bad for us. It's still debatable they're making money on the console, the PS2 and PSP are what are bringing the gaming unit profitability. Just saying their gaming unit is making money while the PSP and PS2 still sell a ton every month doesn't mean the PS3 is making them money.

Wow i would LOVE to play all those games! I will have to buy another 360 because mine keeps blinking three lights!! Maybe i can alternate shipping them and playing them!:D

Wow i don't have these problems with mine!? Glad my versions work!!:D:up

My only complaint (and this is isn't on Sony) is the lack of quality RPG's to play on this system. I especially love the BLU-RAY movies and the upconverting of my old DVD's. They look better than ever. By the way, we have all three systems in my house, but I'm not to impressed with the 360. Got the 3 rings of death, got it fixed and we're getting rid of it.

I only use mine to watch DVD's and BR movies.

For games I use the XBOX360. For me playing on the PS3 feels wierd like I am playing on a console that is unfinished. The gaming experiance on the PS3 makes me feel lonely and alone.

I'd be interested in a poll (or maybe one's been done already) that shows how many people got into gaming after buying a PS3 primarily for BD playback. I don't really buy BDs (just rent), but Sony and its developers has certainly got a fair amount of $$ from me for game purchases that I never thought I'd be spending 9 months ago.

I am right there with you. Poll makes no sense to me, but to answer the title of the thread, Yes x 1 million! I bought my machine just to watch Blu-Rays on and gaming was a secondary concern, especially given I have a young daughter at home and minimal (as in none before 11pm) free time. I kind of think the console was meant for guys like me.

I then discovered the on-line multiplayer world of the PSN and slowly found myself acquiring more titles and playing more games just to blow off steam. Now, I have pretty much turned my PS3 into a home media center as I just stream everything from my computer such as music, video etc. so I have a ready made jukebox/song library in my "man cave." I did not know or consider any of this functionality when I purchased the machine. It does have its drawbacks (crappy internet browser), but I find myself using it more and more everyday for various things as I find out it has the ability to do. Never played Xbox360, so I have nothing to compare it to, however, I do love my PS3 a bit more everyday.

Nice post AriesGodofWar.

I used to go by 'Ares' at Ultrazone until he became somewhat popular on Xena and the name started popping up all over :(.

That's when i started going with the Elstevo/meStevo stuff... but hate that guy Steve-o on Jackass for making that a bit more common.

I do like my PS3 and 360s multimedia capabilities. I download a lot of videos from the internet, and being able to stream them to my console and television directly versus having to set up my laptop with the S-video cable + composite to the television is a much loved asset.

Totally OT:Thanks, not sure what Xena is. The show with Lucy Lawless? My sn comes from the name of one of my dogs. She is a rescued American Pit Bull Terrier named Aries.

I tend to play more games on the PS3 than 360. Probably because I'm long used to the controller layout. The 360 feels "weird" when using it.
So if a game is on both systems, I'll get the PS3 version, and then use the 360 for 360 exclusives.

Anything for the kids though will be on the Wii, as they prefer it more.

I bought mine for the same purpose initially. My purpose was for BR movies. My kids convinced me to get/rent/buy a couple of games. They've played games on both systems. They told me that they preferred the games on the PS3 over the 360. One of their primary reasons was that they liked the graphics better. They also enjoyed the on-line play of many of the games too.

I genuinely bought the PS3 for the gaming capabilities. I didn't buy it until the Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle came out because that was my "game" that I was waiting for. Initially I really didn't give a crap about BD stuff. I thought, "Oh gee, a slightly better picture and a reason to replace my entire DVD collection with more expensive versions!" Then I rented Wrestlemania on BD and was hooked. The picture was so crisp and clean and really reminded me of being at the events live. Now I have numerous BD discs on my Netflix queue and I am looking into new 1080p televisions and HD-audio capable systems.

I bought mine with then intention of being my Bluray player but have bought a handful of games for it. I have less than ten games and think the Xbox360 is the better gaming machine and use my Xbox360 10 hours for every 1 hour I spend on the PS3. I have nothing against the PS3 for gaming, but other than Metal Gear Solid 4, I really haven't had a reason to cheer about its games. I have Uncharted and Resistance, both were hyped and are lackluster titles. I bought the game "The Darkness" when I first got the unit, even though there is an xbox360 version, because I wanted a good game for the system. I really enjoyed the game until the Level 5 Lower East Side bug hit. This has been almost a year ago and they have not had a fix for it and I cannot finish the game. The same problem was patched with the Xbox version months ago but they told me they hadn't heard of other PS3 players having the problem. I have found via Google search that others in fact have had the problem but the only fix is to start the game over and skip a side mission. That doesn't work for me, as if I had several hours to play right now I wouldn't replay a game, I would grab one of the 20 or so XBOX/wii games I've hardly had a chance to touch. Beyond that I have a few dozen games I (we) have played through that I would rather play again (like Halo3) than go through Darkness again.
