From D* to Dish last week...DVR confusing.

D* -- loved them, but their $ was way too high to upgrade to HD. so, made switch to Dish (have eastern arc) and a little disappointed.

DVR is confusing to operate compared to D*. The "Timers", "Dish Pass"....weird. and we have had DVR for long time, so def comfortable w/it. ...and the look of it when you pull up the "Guide" is somewhat generic compared to D*.

anyone else agree? Makes me think about going back to D* realistically.

lol. Are you sure you not talking about the Direct hddvr.

Seriously. I have both and I am willing to bet that within 1 week the Dish hddvr will make you forget all about your Direct dvr.

Just takes some getting used to. As a Dish guy I hate using a Direct box.

Timers = Series Links
Dish Pass = Name based recording

The guide lacks logos, but otherwise has the same info. You can also play with it to show more data

Most agree, the Dish DVR is better than Direct. It's one of the few things Dish has going.

what about this...Am I looking in the wrong spot on the "Guide"...their doesn't seem to be many movies on Dish PPV to order. Especially in HD. ...?

You mean people actually order ppv now even though you can only watch up to 24 hrs. after ordering?

You can set your guide the way you want. Sey up a favorites guide and you can only use that one. You will need to go to menu to do this. Very similar to Direct.

HERE TO HELP YOU!
You will have to set up a favorites list, but for now go to all HD and you should find the HD PPV channels... Dish is easier to switch between favorites as you can hit the guide button to switch between them instead of having to go to menu... with Direct...

I think the Dish DVR is extremely intuitive. Don't bother trying to set timers through the Timers menu, just use that if you need to change or remove a timer. You click on a show on the guide at some future time, and it asks you whether you want to record it, record all episodes of it, or record all new episodes of it. I don't know about the Dish Pass thing, because I can't stand entering text without a keyboard.

PPV? Yeah, the offerings are really limited. But personally, I wish they'd dump them all and devote the bandwidth to normal channels.

Prob 4 or 5 times already, DVR starts to record shows that we didn't set to record, and we don't even know what the show(s) is/are. Is it too smart for us...j/k. But don't understand that.

Hit your "DVR" button 3 times and it will show you what is on your list to record. From there you can delete anything set to record.

Hit "DVR" 3 times and it will take you to the daily schedule, so you can see whats coming and skip as necessary. Select "timers" to see what's set. With a Dish DVR when you select a future program in the guide, it takes you to the record menu. You may have not wanted to do that, so you may have with select again. But that creates a DVR timer.

Again, the Dish DVR is very intuitive. I suspect, to quote Yoda, you must unlearn what you have learned, at least about DVRs. You can't expect it to behave like a Direct box because it isn't one.

I don't have DirectTV to compare the Dish DVR to, but I do have Comcast (temporarily). Now the Comcast DVR is a real joke (made my Motorola). The only thing Comcast has going for it is a pretty good selection of FREE OnDemand movies, their pitiful DVR simply ruins everything else. It's a cumbersome beast to use, with almost no storage capacity.

I totally agree with you, I switched for the same reason back in March. Sad to say it sounds like in Feb Dish will be right up there with Direct in price. The Dish DVR does not begin to compare with Direct, no where close to the many features D has.

How is it then that the Dish DVR is rated above all other DVRs? What features does the D* DVR have that the E* doesn't?

This guys is from a parallel universe, he is from SyugEtilletas Murof !

I predict his next two statements will be:

" There are too many National HD channels on Dish. "

and

" There are too few Shopping channels on Dish. "

Oh, and after that:

" I want to get my channels from 4 small dishes rather than one. "

Don't turn this into a War Zone Thread...

That started with the first post in the thread.

Note that the OP never mentions exactly what is wrong.

What is he trying to do that he is finding difficult ?

Mysteriously - and suspiciously, he never says !

Suppose he wants to record all new episodes of Chuck:

- Press button on remote labeled "SEARCH"
- Click on C, h, u, c, k
- Get results
- Click on first correct result
- Click on "New Episodes"
- Set options to "Protect" if you also record a lot of disposable stuff.
- Click on "Create Timer"

PS Also suspicious: Join Date: Oct 24th, 2008
so he never posted here when he " had D* "....

seems evident to me that the OP is simply trying to find his way around a new DVR after being used to a different one. I see this all the time in computers with people switching from PC to Mac (I use linux so I'm not involved). You get used to something and you have a "comfort zone". Now you move to something else and it can be frustrating as the same procedure has a different name from one manufacturer to the other.

Let's not simply assume that someone is trying to start a war just because they're asking questions. Help a fella out. :)

I hope that if I make a switch over to D* from E*, they don't treat me like a war monger when I ask questions about their stupid DVR (that was on purpose and in jest.... live with it)

heheheh

c'mon.... have fun!
