I am moving out of my parents house for college this semester. I got an apt for the upcoming college year (august to may). I want to get dish in my name and get the offers that they have. I will be moving out in May out of that apartment and coming back home. Then get a new apartment in august 2008 again like I am going to do now.

If i sign the 18 month commitment, will Dish come help me uninstall in may and then install at my new apt in august 08, even though there's a 3 month gap? or should i cancel in may and sign up again in august 08? will they treat me like a new customer and get me any deals that they will have?

thanks in advance. I tried calling dish but they keep wanting me to sign up like on the spot without even properly answerinh my questions. more pushy than car sales people.

Short Answer: Yes with some exceptions.

Long Answer: Yes, you can get Dish in your name as long as your credit is decent. If it isn't, there are other ways around it but they are a bit costly. As long as your apartment has a private area (read: deck/patio), with a southern exposure you should be good to go. When it comes time for you to move, you can "move" your dish to your parents home or simply put the account in vacation mode for up to 6 months. If you choose to move the dish, there is normally a $75 fee involved. You take your box with you to your parents house and they will come and install a new dish for you and hook everything up. With the DHA commitment, if you canceled service, there would be a fee involved to break the contract. I am not sure dish will give you new customer deals if you do break your contract, however; seeing as if they decide to do so they generally want you to have left in good standing. IMO breaking a contract is not leaving in good standing.

hope this helps.

i am sure i can get dish in my name. so the credit history part is ok.

i dont know if i can "move" it to my parents house because they already have dish here.

u know i been reading the forums and searching, and i seen people talk about getting service in one location and then "moving" it to another. how exactly do you do that? how does dish know what programming to give you? is that dependent on your reciever location or your billing address or something that is in their system?

sorry for all the questions. new to satellite. always took the easy way out with time warner stuff.

You can put the account on vacation and then call back at the new apartment next year and start the service again. I think they charge you $5.00 a month x 3 you're looking at $15.00 while the account is on vacation.

Are you in this apartment by yourself, or will you have roomates?

If this is only for one room, like the living room, and no bedroom tv, then get a DishNOW set-up.

You can start and stop at will, and you can pay for the programming in advance.

No credit checks. A Social Security # is not even needed.

You control everything.

They sell the DishNOW equipment at Radio Shack. Cost is $99+tax for the dish, receiver, remote.

Radio Shack also sells the $40 pre-paid cards that you put toward the purchase of programming.

The DishNOW setup allows for access to Dish Family, Dish100, Dish200, Dish 250, and the premiums(HBO/Showtime/Cinemax/Starz). Plus select Porno/Adult programming.

The HD and the locals are not available. You would need to use an antenna to get the locals in Your area.

If you have one near you, then I would suggest that.

If you really want the locals(and maybe HD), in the setup, then I would possibly suggest the FREE FOR ALL campaign that they run.

You buy the equipment up front(receiver/receivers, dish, etc...) and setup and account, and go from there.

Granted you don't get the discount, but you are not tied to them for 18 months either.

Most people are not diligent when it comes to these commitments, and end up paying more because they don;t read the rules involved.

Especially college kids. And then they end up spending more then they should on something.

To keep costs down, go with DishNOW.

To get what you want with no commitment, go for the FREE FOR ALL.

Or, I think you can sign up and lease the equipment, with no commitment to them, but you just pay full price on the levels of service.

But that I am not sure of.

well I just bought a Sony 40" 720p LCD. So HD was a must.

Otherwise I could have gone with the local cable company which is running a special for $68 which gives me the basic digital cable + 4mb down/512k up internet. But their HD box 15 bucks a month! + HD package another $8.

So I just signed up with Dish. I got:
Top 100 $29.99
HD Package $20
I got the guy to waive the activation fee WITHOUT signing a contract.
And of course I get the $20 off for 10 months.

My options in May are either to
A. Pause the account, take the stuff home with me, then call dish to reinstall it at a new apt
B. Cancel everything, return the stuff, and get a new DISH account under my mom's name/cell.

What do yall think?
Thanks guys.

I'm not an expert at this, but I believe just before you put your account on hold, you can purchase DishMover for a few dollars a month, and then when you move out and go on vacation for the summer, you leave the dish antenna, but bring the receiver with you. When you get settled in your new apartment, you call Dish and they'll send someone out with a new antenna. Then I think you can cancel the monthly DishMover service. Again, I'm not certain with that and don't know if you can do this every summer.

But whatever you do, will depend on if you can even put up a dish at your apartment to receive signals; and then likewise when you move again for your following year of college.

And of course I get the $20 off for 10 months.

Be prepared to wait 12 months for it so start
and keep CEO@echostar.com email address handy.. you will need it.

1) They will initially deny your rebate saying your account was inactive.. that takes about 3-months
2) Then they will say oh that was a computer error when you call them,, that will take 2 months.
3) you call them back and wait another month
4) You then email the CEO, and wait a couple more months,, then your rebate starts.. woo hoo !

I'm not sure, but I believe if you use the Dishn' It Up program you cannot put the account on hold before the 18 month committment is up.

oh-oh! :( i knew this rebate thing would bite me in the a$$.

another question. i was thinkin the other day, instead of me getting my own account, can I add a receiver onto my parents account and take it to my apartment. Will that work? I am guessing I would have to get my own "dish" and pay an installer to point it for me.

how exactly does the receiver know what programming to get and what location it's in?

Having receivers at multiple addresses is against the user agreement. If you get caught, they will disable the offending receiver permanently.
