I'm in the Johnstown PA market and saw DirecTv just added hd locals. Does that mean dish network will be doing it shortly? Are the satellite hd locals based on getting permission from the networks or is it about satellite limitations or something else?

No. And for what it's worth, Dish Network has announced cities they plan to carry at various events and Johnstown has not been mentioned yet. EKB: Dish HD Locals

You are absolutely correct that HD locals are about agreements with the stations and the limitations of their satellites. DirecTV has four spotbeam satellites specifically for designed HD locals. Dish Network is still fitting their pieces of the puzzle together and currently can't match DirecTV's coverage.

Even with all of DIRECTV's claimed capacity, they're still only offering 20% of that capacity (or about 33% of their actual capacity). The issue of carriage agreements is everything.

. DIRECTV 11's spotbeam capacity (500 channels) hasn't been turned up yet.

And how exactly do you know that since people have reported seeing active transponders from D11 and new HD LIL cities have been activated since D11 CONUS went active?

It may mean just the opposite. There seems to be a strategy where they split the smaller markets and only one carrier picks them up.

Each company has to do individual retransmission agreements with the stations, and there are real costs involved, but with limited payback.

Therefore, if DTV picks up a smaller market, it is less likely that DISH will do so.

Wonder if the old saying "the wheel that squeeks, gets the greese", may be applied to your thoughts?:)

DIRECTV has spotbeam capacity for HD locals on Spaceway 1 (250 channels), Spaceway 2 (250 channels) and DIRECTV 10 (500 channels). DIRECTV 11's spotbeam capacity (500 channels) hasn't been turned up yet.

Appreciate your info. What dish do they offer to view these birds? Will the 5 head work?

Great example of why DISH should have gotten into the Satellite Internet Delivery service. When the service fails, repurpose the SAT's for locals. :D

Largely because none of the new HD LIL are reported to be coming from D11 transponders.

Remember that D* still has around 600 unused channels on the first three satellites.
