doesn't really matter what's inside, it's highly unlikely that you'll find a cheaper retail alternative that will work

I received my new OTA adapter today. It works nearly exactly the same as the old one. The signal strength on all channels is nearly exactly the same, and my NBC affiliate, that is on RF 13 actually comes in better than the old one. I am looking forward to them enabling the second tuner (maybe, but it's Dish Soon TM). I can tell no difference between the two. This one is about 1/3 the size of the old one. It has no branding on it whatsoever, and it was made in Malaysia.

So the Hopper can record 20 programs with OTA module, and then 21 if they enable the 2nd tuner?
I've been trying to get some OTA reception, problem is I need to put it 30 feet up, so thats right at my peak of my roof.
So I didn't order one of these just yet.
That is not too far off from the second hand report I got. I am not sure we will see any kind of formal review (this is a niche product) but that seems to be the bottom line. I guess we were all hoping for a better tuner but it is what it is. Hopefully they can keep up with demand and also get that second tuner activated.
Remember way back before the original Hopper was released, when it was rumored that we would be able to connect more than one of the single-tuner OTA adapters to have as many OTA tuners as we want? If Dish had ever enabled that, they wouldn't have needed to go to the trouble of coming up with this dual-tuner OTA adapter.
That was probably nothing more than "wishful thinking" on the part of some posters.
Still, it would be a nice feature to have. I always wondered why it was limited to only one OTA adapter, since the Hopper has so many USB ports.
The original reports coming out of the first Team Summit to show the Xip813 (nearly a year before release as the Hopper) said there could be multiple adapters and even a mention an adapter plugged into a Joey could be made available to the Hopper.
I have no doubt such statements were made, but am also sure all of the standard disclaimers and hedges (maybe, hope to, plan to, it's possible, etc) that float around on a show floor got lost in translation when reported to the forum.
One thing, especially on the early Hoppers, is bandwidth. 1 ATSC channel can be up to 19 Megabits per second. USB 2.0 (which is what the Hopper and HWS had) is limited to 280 Mbit/sec. Consider that you might have a hard drive connected, and that 280 gets eaten up quick. Plus, we don't know what might be using USB internally. All of the USB ports are likely one USB bus, so they share the same BW and power output, with power being another possible restraint.
Plus, it's just more complicated to write software that can deal with a changing number of tuners, etc.

Again we have no specs. If you read the two accounts of actual installations it seems to be comparable to the old. One person lost one channel (though signal strength was marginally better) and another got better reception on a weak channel. it is hard to say though. You may get different resuts when you run two scans with the same tuner so results like we have here really d not tell us much.
Has anyone been able to delete the unwanted channels without the H3 crashing? I tried and it crashed. Other than that the Dongle works fine.

Called Rention dept to cancel (only way to talk to someone that knows anything these days), later xfered to a Manger.
They said the new one would not be out till late summer, there were some released as a Pilot test to 3rd Party dealers but they only made a couple of dozen to test with and they were under NDAs.
The test is over so they can sell any they have.
He Suggested I try the 3rd party route or Ebay till they are really released on the Dish Store.

Don't really buy the retention manager's story, but then again I rarely believe phone support folks. The "summer" timeframe in all of this is for the software to allow the second of the two onboard tuners to be activated...not when the adapter itself was supposed to be released. The new adapters are available from the source below if you want one. They seem to be the only one who has them in stock so far (a few in this thread have received theirs already), priced $10 over what Dish is supposedly going to be selling them for. Suit yourself if the extra $10 is worth waiting on Dish themselves to stock them.
