Newbie need help setting CS5K with GS2100

Hi all,

I am a newbie on this FTA. I am trying and trying and trying after reading many posts here, but can not succesfully get any signal from the correct sat.


I need any help to set up the following configuration:
CS-5000 with GS2100;
30" Fortec Dish, Universal Fortec LBN.

My ZIP code 77449.
Lat 29.49 N
Long 95.43 W

What is my True South Sat? 97W IA-5 or 95W Galaxy 3C?
What is the Dish Elevation and Motor angle setting for GS-2100 motor to aim for the true south sat. (I use the setting from GS-2100 manual, but it does not work)

95 w would be your true south. Go to www.sadoun.com and go to the tech section. Then you can input your zip, and get the angles. After you have those, bypass the motor and set up your dish for your true south satellite, scan that in, then go back and hook up the motor.
 
-Before setting the motor or dish, make sure the mount pole is "plumb". That means perfectly level. You should use a bubble level to check it. ($5 at home depot)
-A common mistake is setting the elevation on the motor incorrectly. There should be a scale on the motor mount marked "LATITUDE". You just set it to your actual latitude.(29.5)
-Then, use the guide that came with the motor to set the elevation on the dish bracket.
-Mount the dish to the motor, and mount the motor to the pole. But, don't tighten it to the pole 100% yet. Make sure it's snug, but that you can still rotate it from side to side.
-Take a compass, and align it to North. Then, rotate the whole dish/motor assembly to 174deg, according to the compass.
-Connect the cable from the lnb to the motor, and the motor to the receiver.
-Go to antenna setup screen in the reciver, and choose Galaxy 3. In the antenna postion setup screen, choose USALS and enter your own latitude and longitude. Then, find the command "go to zero" or "go to reference". That should move the motor to "zero". Then, choose "go to position". That will move the motor to the Galaxy 3 position.
-Now, you need to rotate the dish/motor assembly an 1/8in at a time, until you see a signal QUALITY for galaxy 3. Remember, just a tiny 1/8in nudge at a time. First, a total of an inch or so to the left, then if no signal, to the right. That last step can take a while.
-Once you've gotten the best signal you can, tighten the motor to the pole 100%. Then, you can fine-adjust the dish elevation (NOT motor elevation) for optimum signal.
-Remember to use the signal QUALITY meter on the screen, NOT signal strength.

Once your dish is aligned for your true south satellite, you simply set the other satellites to USALS, and the Coolsat will move the motor to the proper position. On occasion, some people report having to use the manual motor control (diseqc) to nudge it a little. But, I didn't have that issue with my Coolsat.

Its a GOOD idea to remove the motor and try to find a few satellites FIRST, will make thing much easier, TRUST me :)

When you do get round to adding the motor........

Motor Elevation = 60º

Dish (on motor) Elevation = 25º
 
That's very true! You can get a feel for where 95 and 97 are by temporarily mounting the dish directly to the pole manually moving the dish back and forth.
Then, when you get a feel for it, you can remount it with the motor. That's what I did, after getting frustrated with the motor. I totally forgot about that.

Just remember to change the dish elevation, which will be different for non-motor and motor mounting. (55deg without, check your motor manual for "with")

Also, don't forget to disable USALS motor control in the Coolsat without the motor, and re-enable when you add the motor.
 
When I started setting my rig up Pete gave me a set of numbers that didn't agree with what the manual said (I'm not sure what that was about) but "Listen to Pete" he's got the magic numbers.I did try what the manual said (In a fit of desperation, the problem wasn't numbers it was me). It's raining like crazy and theres not one bit of fading,no pixelation (?). no freeze ups like the old "Dish" used to do I'm glad I went with the 1.2M Geosat. Go easy on your hair and keep telling yourself how much fun your having, cuz it really is. Good luck. whiteoakHarold
