PS3 Network Down?

Watching local news this morning they are saying that by may 31st system will be back up?

Now is suppose to be up across the country. I was able to change my password this morning and login. And once I did that was also able to go and logon the PSN web sites from my PC.

The store is now showing down. Someone on the Playstation Web site said it is suppose to not be up until near the end of the month.

Yeahhhhhh...

Baseball is back up and running.

Don't give a damn if the store is still down, as long as the network is up. Already watched parts of some games this morning

What two free games are you getting with the Welcome Back offer. The choices are (for PS3) in case you haven't heard:

Little Big Planet
Infamous
Super Stardust HD
Wipeout HD + Fury DLC
Dead Nation

I'm definitely getting Infamous and leaning toward Dead Nation, but will demo SS and Wipeout first. (I already own LBP).

Though some may complain they already have these games or some are pretty old, the offer is better than I thought it would be. I actually came very close to buying Infamous during the outage and Dead Nation a couple months ago when it was on sale.

Have infamous from my cousin and lbp I sold last year. To me the other 3 options are rather sub par. I think it would have been cooler to get like a 60 dollar credit to do whatever we wanted with.

I already own all of those, so no joy here. I'm really leaning towards contacting Sony and complaining about how limited the selection is.

Sony's actually been dealing with a bunch of complaints and have defended their selection of free games: Sony Defends PSN Welcome Back Offer, News from GamePro

Going with all older games, they were certainly setting themselves up for this, especially as the most loyal customers, who spend the most money/buy the most games with them, would have the most issues with the five offered. A $60 credit would be a bit much, but even a $10 credit with a huge half-price sale of dozens of games would've probably been better..

The bottom line, though, they really didn't have to offer anything.

Particularly for us that use their network for other things besides gaming.

Games aren't the only thing they are offerng:

•A selection of “On Us” rental movie titles will be available to PlayStation Network customers over one weekend, where Video Service is available. Those titles will be announced soon.
•30 days free PlayStation Plus membership for non PlayStation Plus subscribers.
•Existing PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive an additional 60 days of free subscription.
•Existing Music Unlimited Premium Trial subscription members will receive an additional 30 days of free premium subscription.
•Additional 30 days + time lost for existing members of Music Unlimited Premium/Basic subscription free of charge for existing Premium/Basic members.
•To welcome users Home, PlayStation Home will be offering 100 free virtual items. Additional free content will be released soon, including the next addition to the Home Mansion personal space, and Ooblag’s Alien Casino, an exclusive game.

You know, they really didn't have to offer anything. The PSN is a free service that was taken down by an external attack. Sure their security could've been better (let's not rehash those arguments), but what they've offered is very generous considering how much money and customers the outage cost them. I personally won't be spending a lot of money on PSN or retail games or DLC I had planned to over the next couple of months as I play the free games and the PS+ games... And I'm sure I"m not the only one.

I'm sorry, but they exposed all of us to ID theft. To say that they don't have to offer anything to mitigate their poor security practices is disingenuous. Not to mention access to other paid services accessed through the PS3... MLB.tv, NHL, Hulu+, and for some even Netflix. The inability to play purchased games that require online authentication should also be taken into account. It's not a simple PSN is free so they owe consumers nothing as you make it out to be.

In that regard, I'd actually be more concerned that they have yet to send out the emails that will allow us to sign up for the ID Theft protection services as promised.

But I agree, saying they don't owe us anything was too extreme. As I stated in a previous post, knowing that their most loyal customers would have most, if not all, of the more popular titles, they should have offered a credit, even as little as $10 and had a massive sale. I think Sony really just needs to explain why such an obvious avenue wasn't taken. I personally would've spent more than the $10 credit to pick up all the games in my wish list that were on temporary sale. As I mentioned, I now don't anticipate spending any money on games for a while. So if $$ was a primary motivating factor on offering mostly older bargain bin titles, then they miscalculated.

But Sony doesn't set the prices of the games or create sales on them do they? Isn't that all mandated by the game companies? Why would these companies want to do that? Sure Sony could give out coupons, but I don't see how they could demand that the game producers lower prices on their products.

It depends on the relationship of the developer/IP to Sony as Sony owns some of them outright (LBP or Naughty Dog for example). I'm sure the same applies for PSN titles. Housemarque is the developer behind both Super Stardust HD and Dead Nation. Probably not a coincidence, though I'm not certain of Sony's arrangement with them.

As far as setting prices/discounts, Sony certainly would have to work out an arrangement depending on the type of relationship they have with that developer. Offering for free Assassins Creed or any of the Prince of Persia PS2 titles (all available on the PSN) would likely involve some serious financial considerations with Ubisoft (a third-party) developer. Whereas Media Molecule (LBP) and Sucker Punch (inFAMOUS) are probably an easier matter due to Sony's relationship.
