Volume Variation

I use the digital audio out from the Voom box into my surround receiver and experience a wide difference in the volume levels when changing channels. It is very annoying and jarring. Is there a way to solve this problem other than muting when changing?

RE: [VOOM] Volume Variation

I don't know but boy do I agree with you! Try changing channels from an HD
channel to Foxnews or MsNbc..it's like you DID mute it, it's so dang low.
Then you turn it up so you can hear and switch channels to an HD channel and
the whole neighborhood knows you just did it. (I have an awesome sound
system ;-) ).

I L O V E my VOOM but this is one issue that drives me nuts!!

Don't bother calling VOOM customer service because they will tell you that you are the first person ever to report this problem. If you do insist on a service call (because you are the only one with this problem so it must be your box), the techs have been told to blame it on your home theater system.

We're going through all the audio levels this morning.

You could do a couple of things.
1. get a very expensive digital limiter to put between your box and your surround sound mixer.
OR
2. If you have a newer TV see if it has volume leveling most of the newer TV's have this feature. Then of course you would have to run your audio out of the STB into your TV audio in. Of course it would probably not be digital in on your TV. Most TV's only balance the level in of the coaxial in and not the digital in but it's worth a check. Of course all of this fix will be a moot point if you have an older TV.

Sorry doesn't seem like help but it's about all the options I can think of.

Bob

Same thing with OTA channels on any of my receivers, they all vary by about 20 db or so.

Or you could do one more thing. Think about switching back to DirecTV like i am. This is just one more thing- that is hard to take from Voom.

Thanks - the most noticeable one for me is Fox News (very quiet).
Overall, its more consistent than the cable I switched from.

There's a big variation among the HD channels as well. I started out the other day to check all the channels and their volume levels but gave up after Cinema8, there was too much variance to establish a reference point.

Switch Digital Output optical cable to Component Cables

dude,

Had the same problem, my expensive Digital optical output sound cable to Surround Sound Receiver gave way to much sound volume level variances.
I switched to Monster Component Cables from the output on my Voom Box to
my Surround Sound Receiver and the sound quality and levels were prefect :clap

Voomster, your last post was confusing. Toslink is for audio, and Component
is for Video. Or are you using Component cables for Audio?

Component cables for audio? Not sure what you mean. Are you using a component cable for the coax audio?

RE: [VOOM] Phone connection

I've been vooming since 6/3/04 and have never plugged in a phone line. The
update will come down via satellite when it's released. I know this because
my receiver was on an old firmware when I first got it and that night it
downloaded .56.

I was looking at the settings on my Voom receiver and I noticed that
the last time it had attempted to call in to Voom, it had failed. I
verified that it was connected to a phone line and I went to the menu
option to have it make a call. That failed again. I then picked up
my phone and dialed the number (800)348-4922. The number is
disconnected/out of service. So, since my box is dialing, but no one
is answering, will I get my long awaited software update that I am
told will fix the stutter problem?

On my tv there is a cluster of 5 rca style connectors, 3 of them are the y, pb, pr connectors, and two of them are the audio connectors. My digitial cable box even came with a component cable that had all 5 cables glued together in a ribbon. I don't think you get 5.1 sound of this setup though, I think you get dolby pro logic only ( a 2 channel stereo steered to 5 channels). I have to use it because my tv's digital out is using my only optical in for sound. I need a new receiver.

Anyway, I'm finding bad variations in sound between the channels too. I really wish I could find a way to normalize all the channels in my current setup. :no

RE: [VOOM] Phone connection

That's cool. Can you send the development team a note to test it out with
VOIP services such as Vonage (www.vonage.com). That's what I have. I don't
have a Bell phone line. I know my alarm company (Brinks Home Security) had
to install a DSL filter for their alarm system to work but it does work :)
I also have battery backup on my vonage box and home entertainment system in
case power goes out.

RE: [VOOM] Phone connection

I have no choice but to hold out until VOOM goes Network/Internet. I'm not
about to pay up to $30 a month for a phone that is only for SAT. But then
again... my neighbor has had DirecTV for years and never had his plugged in
and it works fine :)

Wilt I'm sure it is on the back burner but would you think and Internet
connection option would be available within the next year? I would love to
get Voom and would love to see the DVR option have a web feature so that I
could tell it to record a show from work. You know like the Tivo box allows
:)

I know I'm dreaming for a lot but is within a year a fair expectation? or
would it be longer?

Thanks Wilt as always!
