Ive had voom about a week and canceled the other night cause the
picture quality isnt that good for me. Discovery hd and other channels
show some imperfections in the picture and about the only channel that
looks good is hdnews. My ota antenna hasnt worked for like 4 days it
just quit working. I have the box set on the top line 1080i and i have
tryed both component and dvi with no luck, My tv isnt a cheap tv it
looks better then voom most the time with dvd. Im considering not
canceling if i can get the picture problems worked out and was
wondering if theres anything i can do? Thanks for any help

Voom transmits at an avg of 12 mbps and to make it worse the signal is at low power and a terrible inclination for the west coast. You cant get a drop dead picture under mpeg2 at 12 mbps.

Hey Verbano, would you tell us why you think Voom is deliberately running at low bandwidth?

I have seen a lot of your posts, and you seem to know what you are talking about. But I cannot imagine why Voom would deliberately target low bandwidth when they are a brand new service and need to impress new customers. You keep saying they should up their bandwidth. As if they have a choice.

Are they over extended on channels already? Their new equipment must be good. Perhaps they haven't hit their stride yet? Why would they hold back if they can do better?

Personally, I have been perfectly happy with Voom PQ. But if 1080i can be even better than this, I would like them to improve, too!

lol. Sean has confirmed an average bandwidth of 12mbps on our HD channels. Someone over at AVS did an analysis also when Voom first started transmitting. HD can look spectacular at 16mbps ala HDnet on E* or D*. I think they are 15-17mbps on that. In any case dropping or combining just 3 HD exclusives could give us 36mbps extra to distribute over 37-3 = 34 channels. We could easily raise the PQ to 13 mbps average. At 15 mbps I think we would have something to brag about.

go watch CBS OTA HD with no subchannels, thats 19.3 or 19.6 mbps under mpeg2 1080i. There is nothing better. A step down is HDNET on D* or E* at 15-17 mbps, although it is a small step down. At the bottom of the HD barrel is our 12mbps average. From what ive seen, the barker channel and hdn news look higher than 12 mbps so the rest must be even lower. IF your local affiliate OTA stations tried to broadcast at 12mbps you wouldnt want to watch it. They would have to convert it to 720p to stop pixelation just as my PBS station does because of all of the subchannels. I think voom does some kind of filtering resulting is less picture detail on some of these channels in lieu of sending 720p.Maybe the mpeg decipherII they use does it, Just my opinion.

But to answer your question, YES THEY HAVE A CHOICE!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks, Verbano. Voom execs must think that a lot of HD channels will attract more customers than higher PQ.

As for me, I have nothing to compare. We are too far to get any OTA HD. We have VaVaVoom and that's it -- didn't even bother to put up the OTA antenna. Used to have cable which doesn't carry HDNet or INHDs. Never have seen CBS OTA HD.

I don't know where you are located on the west coast. I am in Millbrae, California and I get a GREAT picture. I have DirecTV alson and except for HDNet all the pictures are better on VOOM. I know we don't have all the channels but I can live with that. I hope they concentrate on a DVR first.
