Microsoft is presently working on a Service Pack 3 for XP and long ago allowed Dell and some others to go back to selling XP on systems and laptops because people just don't want Vista. So while MS has stated that they'll stop selling XP in January or that retail support will end then, it appears that their actions are saying something a bit different.

Microsoft shouts service pack plans - The INQUIRER

XP SP3 is mostly all the updates and hot fixes rolled up into one package. Have you installed XP lately... it seems like it takes days to get through all the updates to get it current. SP3 will mainly just fix that problem.
so its not like they are still developing for it, just making the ton of updates over the last few years, a lot easier to do.

What? You don't like having to reboot the machine four times immediately after doing a fresh install just to make sure you've taken all of the latest updates?

Hell, just from that standpoint alone I welcome the arrival of XP with SP3. Maybe now I won't have to update through three different versions of .Net as well.

ha, i hear ya... i do a little bit of computer repair work on the side for small businesses, and anytime i have to do a fresh install.... it takes FOREVER

I heard from our IT department that MSoft will not support WinXP after 1/08 and therefore the OS could possibly stop working a few months later.
Did they tell you this in writing or verbally ? If they told you this and you re-worded it, I can understand... If this is literally word-for-word, I question the competency of your IT people.

Update your install CD to include the latest service pack. You might have to make a retail CD and an OEM CD but use the customer's key and you're fine. What sucks is reinstalling from an original pre-SP1 XP OEM CD that you can't patch (I think you can't).

Microsoft still supports WIn98....so no, XP Pro support will NOT end in Jan 08....

If you want a Dell laptop with XP Pro on it, select Small Business on Dell's website, not Home Consumer....you get the option of switching the OS to XP Pro and free shipping!

I believe they have extended the sale of XP from 1/08 to 7/08, by popular demand.

Unfortunately, I bought 2 Vista laptops for where I work. Woe is me. Putting them on an SBS2003 server network has been a pain. We had to upgrade the Symantec corporate AV program to handle them- OMG what a disaster! And the wonderful pleasure of having Vista "see" a printer, but not have a driver to actually use it. O joy of joys. One thing it does do: It teaches you patience. 'Cause nothing happens quickly.

From what I read, Vista SP1 does not do nearly enough to make it a usable OS.

I wish our accounting program ran on something other than Windows.

"End of support for Windows 98 and Windows Me

July 11, 2006 will bring a close to Extended Support for Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Me as part of the Microsoft Lifecycle Policy. Microsoft will retire public and technical support, including security updates, by this date.

Existing support documents and content, however, will continue to be available through the Microsoft Support Product Solution Center Web site. This Web site will continue to host a wealth of previous How-to, Troubleshooting, and Configuration content for anyone who may need self-service.

Microsoft is retiring support for these products because they are outdated and can expose customers to security risks. We recommend that customers who are still running Windows 98 or Windows Me upgrade to a newer, more secure Microsoft operating system, such as Windows XP, as soon as possible.

Customers who upgrade to Windows XP report improved security, richer functionality, and increased productivity.

End of support for Windows XP Service Pack 1

On October 10, 2006, Microsoft will end all public assisted support for Windows XP Service Pack1 (SP1). After this date, Microsoft will no longer provide any incident support options or security updates for this retired service pack under the policies defined by the Microsoft Support Lifecycle policy.

To enhance the security of your computer and to continue to receive updates for Windows XP, we recommend you upgrade your computer, for free, to Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).

Enterprise customers
Microsoft will, under qualified conditions, make Custom Support Agreements (CSA) available for eligible enterprise customers. CSA customers are also encouraged to consider migrating to Windows Vista as part of their migration plan. Customers may qualify for a CSA if they have a current Premier support agreement, and a detailed migration plan moving them from Windows XP SP1 to the latest operating system. To learn more about Custom Support Agreements, contact your Premier support Technical Account Manager (TAM). "

I'm one of those geeks that re-installs Windows on my machine every year to clean out all the crap and keep my system running quickly. Right before I do it, I create a slipstreamed Windows XP CD with SP2 and all the current hotfixes included in it. I also end up re-installing Windows on many friends and relatives computers when they screw things up. Doing this across my few PCs at home is made much quicker with a slipstreamed CD.

never had a problem on either of my systems (one two years old - one four years old) after installing vista. Everything that worked just fine before - also worked just fine after. I've actually had less problems with Vista than I had with XP so far.

:)

Well your one of the lucky few.

Speaking as someone who still uses XP with the "classic" folder views, I hate change. I hear that the new ribbon is universally hated as it throws most of our familiarity out the window, but supposedly you can change it back to a more familiar feel if you change a setting somewhere.

Yup, same here I use the classic theme here too!

Since I value my rights as a consumer I will NEVER "upgrade" to DRM Vista. I'll go linux before I'll ever use Vista.
