Loss of sound on hdmi

Yesterday the sound through my hdmi cable was scratchy, almost like through a radio. Sound was fine through coaxial/optical cable to stereo receiver. This problem appeared on every channel. Today the audio through hdmi cable did not work, while still works well through receiver.

Could the cable have failed? Or is this related to DRM efforts?

HDMI has issues all over the place.

If you've got optical digital to your a/v receiver, simply get some red/white audio cables from rcvr to tv, it's only stereo anyway.

You might try power down your sat receiver by unplugging it and leave it unplug for a minute or so then plug it in. Then see if you get the sound back if not call Dish they should be able to send you a replacement..

Dude if you have a stereo receiver the sound from that is much better than what you will get thrugh the hdmi cable

Huh? I would assume that he is running HDMI to his receiver to get full surround sound. HDMI is the only thing that has the bandwidth to cary the new audio types, optical can't do it.

I do use the receiver for movies and such. But just watching regular tv I don't bother turning on the receiver. The receiver is old enough that it does not have a port for HDMI. Yesterday I ended up just running some tried and true red and white rca cables to the TV. I will never know if it the HDMI cable failed or something with the dish receiver or tv. Thanks for the advice guys. I had not thought about simple running analog cables till someone brought it up.

I had sound fail on my HDMI connection for my 622 after working fine for over a year. I believe the connector inside the unit is very fragile since I could restore sound by wiggling the cable.

In the end I upgraded to a 722 so I could get a working HDMI port. Hopefully they have been made more robust!

As for stereo versus surround, I was under the impression that HDMI on the 622 only does stereo.

That was correct way back in the beginning, but no longer true. It does 5.1via HDMI

I get Dolby 5.1 surround with an optical digital (toslink) audio connection.
How can, hdmi, (with issues all over) be any better for audio???

Sorry for the confusion, for Dish optical is perfectly fine as the best it sends is 5.1 dolby digital. However for other components in a setup (such as a HDDVD player, BluRay player, or gaming system) that can send all of the new audio formats (ie HD audio) you cannot use an optical connection as it cannot be sent over the optical connection.

I had the same issue with my 722 last week. It however was only HD sound and it was both on DVR and Live. SD feeds were fine. I reset my receiver and the problem persisted. I unplugged power to my LCD, waited 30 seconds, plugged her back in and it was fine. Hasn't happend since....

Yes, the HDMI (with a Hi-Def DVD Player), supports new audio types. But, in the case of the 622/722 the HDMI is carrying the same DD 5.1 as the optical out. Either will be equivalent. If you're running HDMI through a capable reciver there's no need to run the extra cable.

Unfortunately for therevev, his hdmi port may be dying. He may have lost the pin carrying digital audio. It's very possible he'll also lose hdmi video in the near future.

At least now, with external hdd support, we can keep our programs when we swap boxes.
