Dish Network 2008 CES Press Conference Discussion

Give up already, I have. This company is worthless. I did the math and by the time hockey season is over it'll only be $100 to cancel my contract.. just in time for the Yankees.

Maybe we can get a several satguy to throw in $1 to help pay your disconnect fee so you switch and we can stop reading your posts about switching.

You can and I would gladly accept :) You could always block me. But I would like to point out that i've been fairly quiet about my unhappiness with Dish as of late. However, there doesn't seem to be any lack of criticism on here. Would you pay for others' disconnect fees as well?

The other thread mentioned a "price freeze."

They are raising the prices now, then "freezing" them for a year until they raise them again next February?

Did they really say something like this?

Hey, if your gonna take a collection up, I will take some too. Afterall I want my locals in HD and the Yankees too:D

Ok now that I got a chance to eat and find a computer with a decent Internet connection...

It appeared from that press conference that Echostar is really trying to diversify into other things besides Dish Network service. Most of what they talked about was their lineup of hardware and the convergance of media. Yes they did talk some about Dish Network, but the products announced we already knew about. I did appreciate the acknoledgement of the failures to add HD in the last part of 2007. The satellite launches have apparently put a dent in their plans regarding new HD channels.

The china satellite launch also shows to me how they are spreading out and focusing on new ventures. Not bad in the perspective of a company but I dont think great news for us as subscribers.

They did commit to new HD, the 100 channel number is just a WAG. Probably just to throw something out there to compare to Directv. Charlie caveated it by saying "if there are actually 100 HD channels actually showing HD".

The 211 as a DVR sounds interesting to me. They need to make the pricing make sense though, so people dont just go out and buy a 211 + EHD, and skip out on the 722,622,612. In that respect, I dont see what market they are after with the 612. All it adds is dual tuners to the 211+EHD. Even then, why not just ship out 622s? Are the parts savings really that great for the agile modulator?

Thats the American way. Dish will raise our prices and then freeze them for a year. Hmm...sorta the same way our over compressed SD looks on our hdtvs.

We will ask about SciFi and USA HD on the show floor, but I am expecting everyone to be tight lipped about any future programming deals/agreements until they are actually finalized.

It does appear that we will see spots on 61.5 sometime soon to serve the new HD local markets. Again, most of this we already knew.

Thanks.

Anyone heard anything from Dish on Norfolk? D* is really pissing me off.

Spotbeams on 61.5 have had some tweaking lately, so the consensus seems to be they can add more HD LiL's with their existing spotbeam capacity at 61.5.

Means another dish for me...

No spotbeams to tweak right now.

Add the dish....or add the OTA. I'd do both.

HOkie, They listed 11 HD locals as coming soon, by end of quarter 1, is there away to find out which Sat they are going to? Cleveland in my case as I only have 110, 119 and 61.5! also I see what you are getting at, and read it in several of charlies answers, They (Dish network) and US (echostar) seems as though We are really seeing two seperate companies and CES has more of echostar (hardware) then Programming (DIsh network) if that is the case, those hoping that CES would bring tons of programming announcements will be disapointed, even though I am sure "They" have some things up their sleeves.

Maybe this is what is holding MSG and FSNY in HD up? Too bad it is just about too late for this years basketball and hockey season.

I was comparing the 11 markets with the TP/Spotbeams assignments this morning and a few of them didn't make sense. I'm thinking we will see a few markets go to LiL with the addition of a few. Definitely not all 11 out of the hole without AMC-14 helping. Once AMC-14 is up and Skyangel is out the way it will be on like donkey kong. ;)
