Dish Network 2008 CES Press Conference Discussion

Digi, what will happen to 129 users when they add to 61.5? Do we get more national HD or have to wait until the 129 bird goes up?

Possibly... I can't seem them adding much to the 61.5 national as that is more stuff to get in the way and move during the upcoming shuffles. For instance, they didn't add the two HDPPV's pulled for SciFi and USA to 61.5, they only added them to 129.

I don't know much about anything, but I can only assume that DISH is working on some sort of plan of putting up most of there National HD on the main SAT locations. Why waste bandwidth by similcasting all HD on 61.5 and 129? It would be much smarter I would think to put up the National HD up with the other main channels at 110 or 119. ALL dish customers have those. I believe thats where the full MPEG4 service comes into play. Anyone that actually knows about this stuff agree/disagree with me?

I'm not quite up to speed on how all that works with new sats and spot beams.

Does that mean they replace the current sats with the same capacity + spot beams or do these new birds run along side the old(current birds)?

The 129 replacement will have spot beams so all the TPs that have LiL HD markets on it will be moved to spot beams. Each DBS satellite has 32 channels (Transponders 1-32). Right now they are using 1 Transponder per local market. So, if they have 10 markets on 10 TPs, they might use 5 TPs for spot beams and free up the other 5 for national content. They can use the same 5 transponder channels over and over by having spots that point to different areas of the country. So, they could use TP1 for NY, Dallas, and LA for example because they are far apart and can transmit different channels to each market using the same channel. The 129 satellite should also have the power to run more transponders.

61.5 has E12 (old rainbow 1) which they could turn on spots and do a lot of markets in the east. With a new satellite going to 61.5 they will also be able to cover a couple of TPs that are currently broken on E3 and are dead. They also will also have the international markets mostly moved off and Sky Angel gone. This will give them more room on 61.5 for both the LiL spot beams and national channels.

E11 is going to 110, it will enable E8 to turn off. E10 and E11 will be able to handle all the TPs at 110. E6 and E8 can then be moved to new slots to add more channels (like 86.5 which Dish has a license for, or even 77 (maybe E3 goes there)).

As far as the TR-40 coupon eligible STB selling at a loss - I don't believe Charlie either. It's been said that SATS worked with Gemstar on the TVGOS feature, so is SATS getting a revenue share? And/or some free advertising on the TVGOS banners? I am happy though that the TVGOS will provide a 7 day guide. That's encouraging.

Also, I'm very interested to hear what kind of IPTV features that the TR-50 will have. What would really be nice is a built-in RSS aggregator to download video podcasts.

Ok what about SciF-HD, USA-HD .Went though the whole thread there was couple of

questions about SciF-HD, USA-HD but they where never answered?? :)

LOok For the Sci Fi & Usa channel in hd to be added on Feb 1, when they announce new hd packs for customers to sub to. THey have the room so we know that isn't the problem. I think it is about timing. VERY SLOW TIMING.

That certainly fits E*'s prior pattern. I seem to recall Universal HD, as well as some additional VOOM channels, went live at about the same time they rolled out the current HD pack. Now that they are changing the HD pack again it makes sense that they would sweeten the deal for the new $10 HD pack in order to promote it a bit.

Where are you getting this info from? I have seen no announcement that says this. Are you only speculating?

I do hope you are right though.

So which one of the new Satellites is going first? I have looked at launch schedules, and I don't see mention of any of them in Q1.

Am I missing something? How are they going to get one up before April 1? Two before July 1 looks damn near impossible.

The only thing I can figure out is that in return for starting service in China, maybe China is launching one of the delayed Satellites this Quarter?

Also, did they say the first satellite would be launched in the first quarter, or actually turned on in the first quarter?

Did I miss something? Dish Network expanding to China? Maybe that's what they cleared off the sat slots at 157 and 148 for. IIRC Dish also had a license for a slot at 166w. I'm pretty sure those could serve China... sure wouldn't do much for the eastern US.

No, dish network is not expanding to China. Echostar Satellite is expanding its fleet of satellites to include one that covers China. Remember Dish Network has been spun off into its own company now.

Charlie hopes to sell a bunch of his hardware and satellite space in an new market me thinks.

As for any programming additions, noone will say anything about anything. Sorry thats just the way it is. No new info on either national or specific channels in local markets (contract negotiations).

I wasn't talking about orbital locations, just the match up of TP's and beams from the little bit info we know about E12.

Here's the way I see it... have Dish1000 installed? Yep. Want HD locals via satellite? Yep. Here's your 61.5 dish.

I live near Huntsville, AL hope I don't have to add a 2nd dish for 61.5 for the HD locals.

Fortunately I can get the all of the HD locals OTA. Full broadcast bitrate too. ;)

Making me buy another dish and have it installed would seem to be a dis-incentive for their business. :(

I'm actually wondering the same thing. Is the map that's shown on the other CES forum the same as the one that came out in the last charlie chat? It's difficult to tell from the picture.

I see they are adding Richmond, VA which doesn't make much sense, b/c Norfolk is a larger market.

I'd really like to see Norfolk, VA added. My 622 has a horrible time with OTA (been through 5 antennas in a year w/ limited success on all 5).

Greetings! I'm really thinking that Norfolk may be in the plans. If you look at the zoomed image of the map, you can locate a green dot @ about Richmond, and another on the Eastern Shore (where I am). I cannot see them adding the Salisbury, MD channels simply because there are only 2 HD's up there (CBS & ABC), so I'm really hopeful that dot is for Norfolk.

Now, that being said, I've read many places that LIN doesn't play well sometimes when it has come to uplinking their HD channels, and WAVY & WVBT used to be owned by LIN (not sure if still are or not), so will we get Norfolk w/o NBC or Fox43? Guess we'll just have to wait & see (every appendage crossed for good luck :) )

btw- Welcome!!

Rob
